Ms. Harris asked if there is a way to weave some of the structured literacy into our high school courses.

Question#: 14

ANSWER:

This year, Montgomery County Public Schools middle and high school leaders across content areas are being provided with the opportunity to engage in professional learning on the Promoting Adolescents’ Comprehension of Text practices to support a schoolwide approach to literacy. These practices currently are being piloted in six middle schools in English language arts, science, and social studies classes.

Some reading interventions at the secondary level also reflect the science of reading research and support students who still need to be reading at grade level, while focusing on phonemic awareness for students with decoding goals. The most intensive secondary intervention platforms such as Orton-Gillingham and System 44 expose students to decodable texts that build their ability to sound out words instead of guessing. Research shows that this leads to more successful independent reading.
