How are we creatively using technology devices in our schools to make devices available to students in our schools?

Question#: 64

ANSWER:

MCPS uses an umbrella of services to address students’ limited access to technology at home. There currently are five strategies to this approach:

  1. The Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) and MCPS have implemented a program for students at the Tanglewood, Magruder’s Discovery, and Stewartown complexes where they have access to Chromebooks and free wireless Internet in their neighborhoods to complete assignments.
  2. In partnership with the Office of Student and Family Support and Engagement, we have implemented the Sprint 1Million program which provides eligible high school students with a tablet device and wireless free of charge to ensure connectivity at home and bridge the homework gap.
  3. We are implementing the Verizon Innovative Learning program at three middle schools (Argyle, Forest Oak, and Neelsville) where all students and educators are provided an iPad and wireless access for two years. This program begins a soft launch in spring 2019 with full implementation in fall 2019.
  4. We are planning to implement a take-home/check-out program where students who demonstrate need can borrow a wireless hotspot device from their schools. This program is pending approval as part of the Capital Improvements Program budget by the Montgomery County Council.  Once approved, we will implement this service in fall 2019.
  5. We are planning to implement a program where students who demonstrate need can borrow a device, typically a Chromebook, for use during the school year. This program, beginning in fall 2019, will be piloted at select schools and also is pending approval of the Tech Mod budget by the Montgomery County Council.
