SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the supervision of the principal, leads innovative and creative work to adjust Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum in order to reengage students with a history of chronic academic and behavioral disengagement and at risk for dropping out of school. Provides educational leadership for students and staff consistent with the vision and mission of Alternative Education. Monitors and analyzes data from the implementation of student discipline policies and participates in suspensions, request for expulsion hearings, and crisis management. Supports the professional development of content instructional and support staff to implement effective 21st Century skills, strategies, and learning outcomes for special population. Creates a climate conducive to learning, defining roles, planning and coordinating programs, effecting change, and decision making. development of content instructional and support staff to implement effective 21st Century skills, strategies, and learning outcomes for special population. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, and research-based instructional practices. Ability to monitor special population instruction and analyze data to improve the achievement of special population students. Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials for special population students with a history of instructional disengagement. Ability to work well with chronically academically and behaviorally disengaged students, students with coded disabilities, teachers, other professionals, administrators, parents of disengaged students, and students with disabilities. Ability to work effectively with students/adults in a professional learning community; observe and analyze teaching skills and assess delivery of curriculum to students with disabilities. Knowledge of current best instructional practices with special population students. Demonstrates evidence of continuing professional study and work related to student growth. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters degree or masters equivalency from an accredited college or university in general education, educational administration and supervision, or a related field. A minimum of three years of outstanding teaching experience required. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Summer employment of 20 days required as stated in the current MCEA teachers contract.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads and models work around positive relationship-building with students.

Develops alternative teaching strategies to reengage students inside and outside of the classroom.

Develops out-of-school options and builds partnerships with community stakeholders in order to serve students.

Leads a team of professionals in developing individual student academic study plans in which student needs are prioritized.

Develops modules and programs through which students can begin to better understand their interests and potential and become effective self-advocates.

Meets frequently with school administrators on instructional issues.

Works with administration and the department/subject field(s) to prepare students for examinations and standardized tests.

Ensures implementation of approved and new MCPS curriculum.

Collaborates with other department/grade-level teachers.

Fosters cooperative relationships with central services and school staff.

Participates in the planning and implementation of staff development activities.

Observes instructional formally and informally and writes observation reports for inclusion in teacher evaluation summaries.

Analyzes data to help teachers improve areas of instruction.

Participates in the design and implementation of the local school improvement plan.

Serves as an active participant in Leadership Team or Instructional Council meetings as needed.

Dialogues with consulting teachers and mentors assigned to teachers within the department/subject field(s).

Works with the administration, school finance staff, and teachers to order and distribute instructional materials.

Manages the departmental/subject field(s) budget.

Develops master schedule for assigned courses in collaboration with school administrators.

Assists counselors and others in determining best placements for students.

Assists with hiring of new teachers and other staff where appropriate.

Assists school secretarial staff with classroom coverage in emergency situations.

Attends appropriate central services and school meetings, works with subject coordinators and shares information with department/subject fields(s) teachers.

Hosts departmental meetings as needed.

Participates in student/teacher or parent/teacher conferences as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.
