TV Production Technician

WORKING TITLE: TV Production Technician GRADE: 17 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs numerous crew assignments for the coverage of remote and studio TV programs. Must demonstrate creative and technical in the implementation of each assignment as used in the creation and development of informational television programs. Work of the class involves responsibility for various phases of television program production both in the studio and remote locations including a variety of crew positions to include but not limited to nonlinear editing, and basic graphics creation, audio, lighting, and teleprompter, and floor directing. May involve some additional work in post-production nonlinear editing and graphics. Works with a team of other television professionals to help produce a completed program. May also work on individual segments of programs as assigned to help achieve a desired outcome.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of multimedia productions encompassing the areas of TV, webcasting, videography, cablecasting technology, video, lighting audio systems, and computer applications related to nonlinear editing. Ability to work effectively with teachers, students and staff in development of numerous multi-media productions using a variety of styles. Strong working knowledge of the practices and methods used in TV production for studio television and remote television equipment. Aptitude for learning the technical characteristics and operation of new equipment. Knowledge to maintain and implement safe operational practices. Ability to apply a variety of technical knowledge skills to a wide range of production problems; ability to articulate the programming needs of staff via the television medium; ability to communicate effectively. Must have thorough knowledge of the operation of all broadcast production equipment and non linear editing equipment. Must be prepared to keep up with new technological advances. Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills required. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. Major course work in TV production/direction, sound engineering electronics, sound recording, computers, and shop, with at least three years of professional experience in videography, studio camerawork, and set up and use of remote equipment for numerous media and TV productions on location and in a studio setting. Demonstrated working experience and understanding in the technical capacity of all TV-related productions required. Experience may be substituted for the degree requirement if the experience is consistent with course work described above. Employee must have experience working on a crew of tape and live productions for remote ENG and EFP productions and have a video resume tape of these programs for evaluation. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland Class C non-commercial driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Must be able to move or carry (using a hand truck) heavy equipment cases up to 50 pounds. Ability to move equipment weighing 50+ pounds, climb ladders, and work from high places. Ability to perform work requiring considerable walking, and moving and setting up equipment in varied locations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Overtime, night work and weekend work required. Employee must be able to work a flexible time schedule depending upon program project assignment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides production support for remote and studio-based TV programs and other technical operations as assigned within the Department of Communications.

2. Ability to serve as a studio lighting designer, camera operator, technical director, videographer, audio person, floor director, teleprompter operator, non linear editor or sound technician and perform studio and remote camerawork.

3. Responsible for setup of multimedia equipment for production in the field and at meetings.

4. Monitors audio for live and taped productions in the studio and at remote locations.

5. Operates teleprompter both in the field and studio. May assist in teleprompter writing and editing.

6. May serve as technical director or switcher for producer-director.

7. Helps arrange for and transports equipment to and from remote locations.

8. Writes copy or articles for website.

9. Views videotape and creates editing log; records graphic elements, narration, music and special effects; creates edit version of film with closing credits.

10. Creates on-line edit master and backup master, produces labels and prepares tape for use.

11. Performs related work as required.
