Electrical Construction Technician

WORKING TITLE: Electrical Construction Technician GRADE: 22 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, performs advanced technical work in securing compliance of electrical construction projects with approved Board of Education directives and applicable electrical codes. Work involves responsibility for the application of advanced knowledge of electrical theory and practice to the design and construction of school facilities. Employees in this class are required to exercise independent judgment and initiative in developing work methods and advising the director on major electrical problems. The nature of the work involves considerable and responsible contacts with representatives of utility, electrical subcontractors and business organizations. Work in this class is differential from that of Electrical Construction Technician I by the following responsibilities: developing plans and specifications for the purpose of bidding special projects such as athletic field lighting, portable classroom electrical services, owner-designed renovation projects, and other design projects; inspecting complex projects; providing expert electrical system advice and advising and assisting Electrical Construction Technicians I on the more complex and technically advanced projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of electrical theory, principles, codes, practices, and materials involved in the construction of school buildings and related structures; working knowledge of the various types of standards and procedures used in the design, construction and installation of electrical fixtures, receptacles, and power lines. Ability to review electrical engineering plans, specifications, and equipment drawings and to detect errors in design or deviations from directives or codes; ability to appraise the quality and rate of construction progress; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with architects, contractors, and representatives of utility companies and supply houses, and to prepare written recommendations and reports. Ability to develop plans/specifications for bidding and provide expert Electrical system advice. Good communications and human relations skills. Skill in the use of standard drafting instruments. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree required. Bachelors degree preferred. Considerable college course work or technical school training in electrical engineering. required. Considerable experience in the inspection or supervision of major electrical construction projects. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Master Electrician's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to physically inspect construction sites. Ability to operate testing equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to travel to school sites on frequent and unscheduled basis. Occasional overtime may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Reviews architects' and electrical engineers' construction plans and specifications for compliance with specifications listed in Catalogue of School Construction checks for proper locations of telephones, switches, receptacles, and TV outlets; checks riser diagrams for correct number of breakers as well as for proper amperage to assure protection for the equipment connected; checks drawings for fixtures and receptacles in excess of need; prepares addenda relative to plans and specifications after consultation with immediate supervisor.

2. Makes periodic field inspections throughout construction of project to insure compliance with Board requirements and applicable electric codes; inspects such factors as proper location of junction boxes, wire sizes, sizes and types of conduits, and proper manner of installation; reports irregularities to architect, through supervisor and director, in writing, indicating nature of irregularity and proper code or specification relating thereto.

3. Confers with architects, electrical engineers, contractors, utility companies, and manufacturers representatives where problems occur on the project involving changing locations of equipment, outlets, unacceptable or undelivered materials, and poor workmanship.

4. Advises electrical contractors on acceptable methods of installing electrical equipment where conditions require plan changes.

5. Reviews brochures and drawings of fixtures where there has been substituted material and checks for conformity to specifications; reviews quotations on proposed additional contract work; checks complaints concerning electrical service after building has been accepted for use and reports findings and all details relating thereto in writing to the director.

6. Develops plans and specifications for special projects.

7. Provides expert technical advice regarding electrical systems/components to school system staff.

8. Analyzes electrical system problems and designs modifications to correct.

9. Obtains and manages contractors for minor electrical system projects.

10. Performs related work as required.
