WORKING TITLE: Floor Covering Mechanic GRADE: 15 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: Under direction, performs skilled work in the installation and repair of tile, carpeting, linoleum, and other surface materials in schools and central offices. Work of the class involves installing a variety of floor coverings and repairing and replacing worn coverings. Incumbents are responsible for inspection of worn or damaged floor coverings and for estimation of time and materials needed for replacement. School administrators may be consulted concerning work project schedules and selection of material. An employee in this class is expected to be able to install and repair all types of floor covering. Physical Demands: Ability to perform work requiring extensive kneeling, standing, lifting and sustained physical exertion. Special Requirements: Completion of MCPS Floor Covering Mechanic Skills Test at the required score.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Completion of MCPS Floor Covering Mechanic Skills Test at the required score.Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools of the floor covering trade; considerable knowledge of carpentry maintenance and repair procedures, with particular reference to floors. Ability to repair and install the common types of floor covering materials; ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic; ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials. Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the floor covering trade. Satisfactory completion of a job skills test may be required. Good human relations and communications skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Considerable experience in installation and repair of a variety of floor coverings. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland noncommercial class C driver^s license, or equivalent.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:Tile, linoleum, etc.:1. Removes floor surface material that is defective due to wear, breakage, or damage by water .2. Sands, refinishes, and patches floor if necessary. 3. Measures and cuts covering and foundation materials. 4. Coats floor surfaces and lays covering material on cement. 5. Rolls or presses finished surfaces. 6. Installs tile or linoleum on new or refinished floors. 7. Installs and repairs rubber step treads. 8. Replaces rubber base in hallways and classrooms. Carpeting:1. Measures and cuts fabric from roll. 2. Sizes and installs new carpeting using adhesives in predetermined areas. 3. Removes old or defective fiber. 4. Relays carpet after performing alternation and repair. 5. Insures that patched or replaced sections are properly matched to remaining carpet. 6. Performs preventive maintenance functions to include carpet shampooing, cleaning, or binding work. 7. Performs related duties as required.
