WORKING TITLE: Tire Repairer GRADE: 13 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, repairs and replaces tires for all Montgomery County Public Schools motor vehicles and maintains records of time and materials and services rendered. An employee in this class is responsible for repairing and replacing damaged tires of automobiles, buses, trucks, and other automotive vehicles belonging to Montgomery County Public Schools. Repairs are generally done in the transportation shop area but replacement of damaged tires frequently involves emergency road calls to distressed vehicles. Nature of work involves some exposure to inclement weather and to accident and injury hazards and disagreeable elements. Incidental supervision may be exercised over one or more lower classified employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the standard methods, tools, and equipment common to the repair and replacement of tires; knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of work of this nature; knowledge of, or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, geography and street locations of the county and surrounding area. Ability to maintain basic records. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to locate and repair leaks in tires and tubes. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Experience in the repair and replacement of tube and tubeless tire. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland state commercial class B driver's license or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift or moving objects wearing up to 100lbs. Ability to work overtime as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Repairs damaged tires of automotive vehicles; raises vehicle using hydraulic or other jack and unbolts wheel using lug wrench.

2. Removes wheel from vehicle by hand or by power hoist.

3. Locates puncture in tubeless tire by visual inspection or by immersing inflated tire in water bath and observing air bubbles escaping from puncture.

4. Seals puncture in tubeless tire by inserting adhesive material and expanding rubber plug into puncture using hand tools.

5. Separates tubed tire from wheel using rubber mallet and metal bar or mechanical tire changer.

6. Removes inner tube from tire and inspects tire casing for defects or damage such as holes or tears.

7. Glues tire patch over rupture in tire casing using rubber cement. Inflates inner tube and immerses it in water bath to locate leak.

8. Buffs defective area of inner tube using scraper and patches tube with adhesive rubber patch or seals rubber patch to tube using hot vulcanizing plate.

9. Reassembles tire onto wheel and places wheel on balancing machine to determine counterweights needed to balance wheel.

10. Hammers counterweights onto rim of wheel. Remounts wheel onto vehicle.

11. Responds to emergency calls to make repairs or replacement.

12. Perform other related duties as required to successfully complete the work of the class.
