Statement from Board President Wolff and Superintendent Smith on the March 16 Shootings in Georgia

March 19, 2021

The following statement was released on Wednesday, March 17:

Our condolences and thoughts are with the families and friends of all those affected by the senseless shootings in Georgia. While we don’t yet know the motive, the majority of the victims were of Asian descent.
What we do know is that hate crimes against Asians in the United States are on the rise. This behavior is abhorrent and unacceptable. Equity and respect are core values of Montgomery County Public Schools and we expect all students and staff to embrace these values and celebrate the diversity of our community.
If a student experiences or witnesses bullying or harassment, please tell a school staff member or complete the bullying and harassment form.
We encourage everyone to watch this informative episode of Waymaking that discusses the importance of ally building and how we can work together to create safe spaces for Asian-American students.
