Distinguished Hispanic Scholars Honored

The Hispanic Employees Association of Montgomery County Public Schools (HEAMCPS) honored 22 seniors as Distinguished Hispanic Scholars - each one nominated by his or her high school - at its annual student recognition ceremony celebrated May 29 in the auditorium of the Carver Educational Services Center.

As a group, these outstanding students had an average weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.34, reflecting an impressive record of academic achievement.

Four of the 22 students were selected as Most Distinguished Hispanic Scholars and were awarded scholarships. They are:

§ David Fraga, Winston Churchill High School, $2,000 scholarship.

§ Vanessa Gonzalez, Richard Montgomery High School, $1,500 scholarship in the name of Maria H. Malagon, former ESOL director and former HEAMCPS Board member.

§ Liana Montes, Thomas S. Wootton High School, $1,500 scholarship.

§ Natalia S. Flores, Northwest High School, $1,000 scholarship donated by Counseling Plus, Inc., a co-sponsor of the HEAMCPS Scholarship Fund.
