Board of Education Launches Search for New Superintendent

May 3, 2021

On May 3, the Montgomery County Board of Education took the first step in its search for a new superintendent of schools by issuing a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire a search firm to assist in the superintendent selection process.

“This RFP officially launches our search for a new leader for MCPS,” said Board of Education President Brenda Wolff. “Conducting a national search and identifying the best candidate as MCPS superintendent is one of the most important jobs of the Board of Education.”

A search firm will assist the Montgomery County Board of Education with key pieces of the national search process including: articulating the qualifications for a superintendent; facilitating the process for community input and engagement; identifying and fielding a pool of highly qualified candidates; coordinating the interview process; helping  the Board  narrow down a field of candidates; and advising the Board on an appropriate compensation package.

Superintendent Jack R. Smith announced in January that he will retire at the end of May 2021. The Board appointed Deputy Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight to serve as acting/interim superintendent for the next year, until June 30, 2022.

The Board expects to finalize its selection of a search firm by July 2021.
