The Montgomery County Board of Education (Board) held a business meeting on June 7, 2022. During the meeting, the Board adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 operating budget; adopted Policy FFA, Naming School Facilities; approved an amendment to the financial literacy recommendation; adopted a new framework for health education and physical education; discussed school meals; and made several appointments.

Final Adoption of the Fiscal Year 2023 Operating Budget

The Board adopted a $2.92 billion Operating Budget for FY 2023. This is an increase of $137.9 million (5 percent) from the current FY 2022 budget. The budget will allow Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to provide a continuation of key services, provide critical support to students for mental health and well-being, and cover pandemic increases on operating costs.

Policy FFA, Naming of School Facilities

The Board adopted Policy FFA, Naming of School Facilities. The policy includes updated criteria by which school names are selected, as well as criteria for renaming schools.

Financial Literacy Recommendation

The Board approved a plan that expands access to financial literacy courses. Schools will be required to offer credit and non-credit bearing opportunities for students to develop financial literacy.  The Board amended the resolution to include an update in spring 2023 on student participation and achievement in each of the options and to revisit the possibility of making a financial literacy course a credited graduation requirement.

New Framework for Health Education and Physical Education

The Board adopted the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Maryland Health Education Framework and the Maryland State Department of Education Physical Education Framework for use as the MCPS Health Education and Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks in the development of resources to support instruction and enhance student well-being. The MSDE Health Education and Physical Education Frameworks include legislated mandates and established curriculum requirements for the courses that students take from pre-K–8, as well as a 1.0 health education and 1.0 physical education credit required for high school graduation.

The Board consists of seven county residents elected by voters for a four-year term and a student elected by secondary school students for a one-year term.
