Broad Acres Elementary School Teacher Is Among Seven Finalists

Kimberly Oliver, kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School, is one of seven finalists in the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition for 2005-2006. She and the other finalists were selected from among 24 winners in local jurisdictions by a Maryland State Department of Education review panel.

The winner of the Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced at a reception and ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m. on October 7 at Martin's West in Baltimore.

Oliver is credited with having a major role in the instructional design of the restructuring of Broad Acres following declining test scores in this school with a poverty rate of approximately 88 percent. At the end of the third year of the restructuring, Broad Acres students achieved Adequate Yearly Progress, meeting or exceeding all requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act for the 2003 and 2004 school years.

Oliver has earned certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. She is a graduate of Hampton University, with a M.Ed. in elementary education from Wilmington College. Oliver has been a kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres since 2000.
