Three MCPS Students are Among 40 Finalists in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge

Three Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students are among the 40 finalists in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge. David Tao, formerly a student at Takoma Park Middle School, and Jacob Hurwitz and Scott Yu, formerly students at Robert Frost Middle School, now attend Montgomery Blair High School. They will present their projects to the public on Sunday, October 22.

The Challenge presentations are scheduled at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on October 22. Students will be available for interviews with the media.

The 40 finalists were selected for their scientific reasoning and ability to communicate the goals and outcomes of their projects, which span the spectrum of scientific discovery.

The presentations on October 22 kick off the four-day challenge, which includes two days of competition at the National Institutes of Health. The challenge ends in an awards ceremony at Discovery in Silver Spring, where America’s Top Young Scientist will be named based on the students’ performance throughout the four-day event and on their science fair projects.
