Stock Trading Room Enhances Investment Class

November 15, 2006
Gaithersburg High School Celebrates Opening
of First High School Stock Trading Room in Nation

Students Will Have Fund of $25,000 To Trade

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Jerry D. Weast will highlight the opening of the first high school trading room in the nation at Gaithersburg High School (GHS). Joining Dr. Weast will be Board of Education Vice President Sharon Cox and City of Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz.

The event will take place at Gaithersburg High School on Monday, November 20, at 10:00 a.m.

The GHS Trading Room Project was funded by a $75,000 grant from the NASDAQ Stock Market Education Foundation, Inc. A new trading room constructed at GHS includes a NASDAQ data board, ticker, and LCD that receive up-to-the-minute stock market data. A longtime supporter of the school system has made $25,000 available to the students to trade and will allow the school to keep any profits in the account.

Through the student-managed investment fund class, the Academy of Finance (AOF) provides students with rigorous academic training in money management, portfolio selection and risk management concepts. In addition to AOF students, all MCPS students and the community at large are being offered opportunities to use the trading room through financial literacy courses and various outreach programs.
