Seventy-three elementary schools, a learning center for students with multiple disabilities, and 12 middle schools have earned certificates of recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) in the 2006 Maryland School Performance Program.

The awards, which include monetary awards to nine Title I schools showing significant improvement, were based on performance on the 2006 Maryland School Assessment (MSA).

Schools on the list receive recognition based on overall achievement or for improvement within a subgroup from the 2005 to 2006 MSA. Subgroups include race/ethnicity, special education, limited English proficiency, and students who are receiving free or reduced-price meals.

Forty-one schools received certificates for overall achievement. Twenty-seven schools were recognized for improvement within a subgroup. Eighteen schools received certificates for both overall achievement and subgroup improvement, including one Title I school, Viers Mill Elementary School.

High schools will be recognized at a later date.

Later this year, the Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools and the National Title I Distinguished Schools will be named from among the recognized schools.
