Tests Show Gains in Reading and Math Performance

August 15, 2008
Press Conference to Highlight Results of TerraNova Second Edition and End-of-Year Reading Benchmarks

Results of the 2008 TerraNova Second Edition (TN/2) national exam taken by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) second graders show how performance of MCPS students compares to students nationwide in reading, language, and mathematics. MCPS students made significant gains from 2007 to 2008 on the TN/2. In addition, the 2008 End-of-Year Reading Benchmarks tests for kindergarten through second grade show steady improvement by all student subgroups.

Dr. Jerry D.Weast, superintendent of schools, and Nancy Navarro, president of the Board of Education, will unveil the results of these student performance assessments and talk about the ways in which MCPS is raising the academic bar for all students and further narrowing the achievement gap among demographic subgroups.
