More than 10,000 high school students and students in alternative programs are graduating and receiving diplomas from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) this spring. Thirty-one schools and programs have scheduled graduation ceremonies through June 12. Graduating seniors at several schools chose classroom teachers, school administrators, and students as graduation speakers.

Other highlights from the list of speakers include:

- Current White House press secretary Robert Gibbs will speak at Winston Churchill High School. Graduation speakers also include former press secretaries—Michael McCurry, who worked for President Bill Clinton, at Walter Johnson High School, and Scott McClellan, who worked for President George W. Bush, at Walt Whitman High School.

- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will speak at Quince Orchard High School.

- Chet Culver, Governor of Iowa, is the speaker at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. He is among three MCPS graduates who are delivering graduation speeches at their alma maters. Other elected officials who are speaking include Congressman Chris Van Hollen at Richard Montgomery High School.

- Members of the news media are popular selections again this year. Washington Post Columnist John Kelly will be at James Hubert Blake High School, and Gail Pennybacker, reporter for WJLA ABC-7, will be at Rock Terrace.

- Athletic coaches and players speaking at graduations include Jordan Steffy, quarterback at the University of Maryland, College Park, at Wheaton High School, and Tyree Foreman, a football coach at Temple University, at Sherwood High School.

- Author Edith Mayer Cord (Becoming Edith, The Education of a Hidden Child) is the graduation speaker at Damascus High School, and author Liz Murray (Homeless to Harvard, An Extraordinarily Inspiring Journey) will speak at Northwest High School.
