Update on the Search for a New Superintendent of Schools

April 12, 2011
The Board of Education, today, released the following update on the search for a new superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools:

In March, the Montgomery County Board of Education reviewed applications from 30 candidates that applied for the position of the superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools. The applicants came from 15 different states and were comprised of 18 current superintendents, two central office administrators, three principals, three persons currently working in business organizations, and four individuals from other private sector organizations that focus on education.

This month, after careful review and deliberation, the Board is selecting and interviewing a limited group of candidates. Following these interviews, the Board will identify up to three finalists and a Community Committee will interview those candidates. The Community Committee is a group of citizens drawn from a broad-based section of Montgomery County that represents students, post-secondary institutions, parents, multicultural and civic organizations, special needs advocates, employee unions, businesses, career and technology associations, non-profit organizations, and county agencies. The full list of participating organizations will be
posted on the Board’s website.

The Board will conduct second interviews with each of the finalists.  Based on the input from the Community Committee and the information gathered by the Board, the preferred candidate will be identified. All finalists to be interviewed by the Board will have gone through a screening interview, reference checks, and a complete and comprehensive background check conducted by an independent third party company.

The desired timeline is to complete final reference checking and to negotiate a contract well in advance of the July 2011 start date for the new superintendent. The Board will not compromise in looking for the right leader for Montgomery County Public Schools. During this process, the Board remains committed to maintaining the confidentiality of candidates in order to find the best leader for our school system. The Board will continue to provide updates to the community as the search process progresses.
