MCPS Launches Spanish News Program Noticias de MCPS

April 20, 2012
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has launched a new weekly Spanish news program, Noticias de MCPS, to share news, information, and highlights with the district’s growing Spanish-speaking community.

The Noticias de MCPS program will help inform our Spanish-speaking community about what is going on in MCPS,” said Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr. The program will be cablecast on MCPS TV (Comcast Channel 34, Verizon Channel 36 and RCN Channel 89) and featured at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/es on a refreshed version of the Spanish section of the MCPS website. The revamped site will feature news stories, highlight upcoming events, and provide information on important resources for MCPS’ Spanish-speaking families.

According to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Montgomery County has more than 140,000 residents who speak Spanish at home. MCPS TV currently produces two other programs in Spanish,
Diez Minutos, and Nuestras Escuelas.  Dr. Starr has made improving community engagement one of the district’s top priorities for the coming school year, including how to better engage the Spanish-speaking community. Earlier this year, MCPS launched a Spanish Twitter feed (@MCPSEspanol) as part of its strategic efforts to enhance communication with Spanish-speaking families.
