Ten High Schools Win Top National Awards for Student Literary Magazines

Ten MCPS high schools won top awards for their student-produced publications in the 15th annual Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

County schools earned four of the six highest awards given in Maryland, an honor presented to only 66 of the 736 school magazines that were entered in the 1998 competition. The four schools and their magazines, along with their staff advisors, are:

  • Winston Churchill High School, Erehwon

  • Romi Sussman, English teacher

  • Richard Montgomery High School, Fine Lines

  • Anita Anderson, English composition assistant

  • Linda Ellis, English teacher

  • Paint Branch High School, Signatures

  • Nancy Peckerar, English teacher

  • Springbrook High School, Musings

  • Omari C. Daniel, English teacher

    The following three schools received superior ratings:

  • Montgomery Blair High School, Silver Quill

  • Carole Tomayko, English teacher

  • Walter Johnson High School, The Spectator

  • Sharon Cohen, social studies teacher

  • Walt Whitman High School, Eidolon

  • Suzanne W. Coker, English teacher

    The following four schools received excellent ratings:

  • Damascus High School, The Reverie

  • Nancy Scribner, English composition assistant

  • Quince Orchard High School, The Cat's Tales of Peripeteia

  • Catherine H. Elliott, English teacher

  • Watkins Mill High School, Avant-Garde: Outlets 1998

  • Joanna Howard, English composition assistant

  • Thomas S. Wootton High School, Pensations

  • Kathleen Wolfrey, English composition assistant
