Media Advisory: USDA Official Joins Takoma Park Middle School Students in Celebrating National School Lunch Week (corrected)

USDA Food, Nutrition and Consumer Service Under Secretary, Kevin Concannon, will join students and staff from Takoma Park Middle School TOMORROW, Oct. 21, as they celebrate National School Lunch Week and highlight the importance of eating healthy and staying active.

School lunch is an important part of a child’s health, development, and academic success. Accordingly, Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010 with bipartisan support to help ensure every American child has access to the nutrition they need to grow into healthy adults. During National School Lunch Week, USDA celebrates healthy strides and highlights innovative strategies to help schools nourish their students.

Takoma Park Middle School is a public middle school in Montgomery County and contains a total of 18 academic departments, as well as a specialized magnet program. This notable program draws students from throughout the county. Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has made a significant effort to improve the quality and nutritional value of school meals.

WHAT: Photo/B-roll opportunity and media availability: USDA Food, Nutrition and Consumer Service Under Secretary Kevin Concannon will begin the day eating lunch in the school cafeteria with sixth graders, and after a short tour of the school, will observe an eighth grade family and consumer science class and a seventh grade physical education class. Concannon and school district officials will be available for individual interviews with members of the media. A Spanish speaking representative from USDA will also be available.
