Volunteers Needed for Summer Extended Learning Program

May 15, 2002
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) needs approximately 400 volunteer tutors to assist teachers in a new program, “Summer Adventures in Learning,” which will be offered in 18 selected elementary schools from July 15 through August 9. Designed for children entering kindergarten through grade three, this free Extended Learning Opportunities program will give youngsters a chance to improve their reading, writing, and mathematics skills and preview learning for the upcoming school year.

To support these children as they learn, MCPS seeks tutors who can work in the classroom; help with reading, writing, and math; participate in a training during the week of June 24; and make a minimum four-hour commitment to the month-long program, which runs for four hours each weekday morning

This is an exceptional opportunity for volunteers to empower a large number of children and their families and become part of a growing national movement dedicated to volunteerism. Volunteer tutors can choose their school locations and, where possible, their preferred grade levels. In addition, those interested in a career in education will have the chance to gain valuable classroom experience.

“Summer Adventures in Learning” will be available in the following designated MCPS elementary schools:

Blair Cluster: East Silver Spring, Highland View, Montgomery Knolls, New Hampshire Estates, Oak View (at New Hampshire Estates), Pine Crest, Rolling Terrace; Einstein Cluster: Highland; Gaithersburg Cluster: Gaithersburg, Rosemont, Summit Hall; Kennedy Cluster: Kemp Mill; Northeast Consortium: Broad Acres, Burnt Mills; Wheaton Cluster: Harmony Hills, Viers Mill, Weller Road, Wheaton Woods.
