Code Blue Restrictions Continue Mon., Oct. 14

October 13, 2002
Continuing Code Blue security restrictions -- including no outdoor recess, outdoor physical education, open lunch for high school students, or field trips in the Washington area -- will be in place Monday, October 14, as classes resume for the Montgomery County Public Schools. All kindergarten classes will be held as scheduled.

Decisions about school operations, student activities, and the public use of school facilities will continue to be made on a day-to-day basis, with possible changes during the day, as events unfold. A decision about Monday's afternoon and evening activities at schools for students and the public will be made by mid-day Monday.

School system staff, students, parents, and the community are asked to continue to be patient and flexible in order to allow the school system the maximum ability to respond correctly to changing circumstances.

For Monday, October 14:

* Schools will open on time.

* All kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes, including Head Start programs, will be held (including afternoon kindergarten and pre-kindergarten).

* No outdoor activities will be permitted during the school day, including outdoor recess, outdoor physical education, and open lunch for high school students.

* All inter-school programs will continue, including the Thomas Edison High School of Technology, if the students are being transported on school system buses. If students are transporting themselves, they are either to be kept at school or directed to return home.

* Schools will continue to keep exterior doors locked and monitor visitors.

* Classes will be held as scheduled, including those in portable buildings, and students will be permitted to move about under the monitoring of teachers and administrators.

* Student safety patrols for elementary schools will be prohibited from taking their assigned posts at street corners and walkways. Instead, parent volunteers are being requested to act in their place. Parents are encouraged to help children safely walk their children to and from school and bus stops.

* Students who are in the Fundamental Life Skills programs in special education will not be able to participate in community activities and will remain at school.

* All professional development activities during the school day for school-based staff are canceled to allow teachers and other staff to be at school in support of students and their colleagues. (A decision about after-school and evening staff development activities will be made by mid-day Monday.)
