Provide data for the level of demand for interpretation services. How many requests are we unable to fill?

Question#: 68

ANSWER:

The Language Assistance Services Unit (LASU), in the Department of Communications, is responsible for systemwide translation (printed word) and interpretation (spoken word) support. For the current fiscal year, as of January 30, 2019, LASU has fulfilled 8,892 of 9,743 (91 percent) requests for interpretation. Of the requests that LASU was unable to fulfill, 675 (7 percent) were due to a lack of interpreter availability. The remaining 176 (2 percent) were denied because they were duplicate or invalid requests.

MCPS provides all schools with access to an on-demand phone-based interpretation services solution that can be used when MCPS interpreters are unavailable.
