ESOL Counselors
ESOL counselors have the same requirements for credentials as a school counselor, but with the added requirement of being bilingual. The responsibilities are determined by examining the academic, social, personal, and interpersonal needs of ESOL students, as indicated by school data. These responsibilities are centered upon the development of proactive, programmatic initiatives targeted at all ESOL students in the schools and their families.
ESOL counselors are assigned to high schools based on ESOL student enrollment. One full-time counselor is assigned to serve Gaithersburg High School and another to serve Montgomery Blair High School. These two schools have the largest ESOL student enrollment. The remaining schools are serviced in rank order based on enrollment and are not allocated based on a ratio. In addition, a 1.0 position is shared between the Career Readiness and Education Academy (CREA) program at Seneca Valley High School and the Thomas Edison High School of Technology. The allocation of ESOL counselors by school follows.
