Director of Districtwide Professional Learning

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The director of districtwide professional learning (director) reports directly to the chief of strategic initiatives. The director will lead the visioning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of a reimagined districtwide professional learning process that will support all staff to create an antiracist, equitable, and inclusive school district where all students, families, and staff feel safe, valued, seen, heard, and successful. The director is tasked with supporting and integrating all professional development opportunities, ensuring ongoing development for all roles in the system, working collaboratively with multiple offices to establish standards and common workflows, design and implement a communication plan, and produce dynamic thought leadership that aligns with the system strategic plan and is grounded in antiracism, equity, and inclusion. The director will oversee a coordinator and work directly with the chief and executive director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives. The director will collaborate with all offices, associations, and stakeholders to co-create a stream lined and effective professional learning program that is grounded in a researched based approach to adult learning that maximizes student performance and ensures student well-being.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated experience with leading organizational change, co-creating professional learning, designing effective adult learning, coaching leaders, and engaging diverse stakeholders. Strong understanding of the research and best practices for antiracist and culturally responsive adult learning. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Beliefs and actions reflect the mission, vision, and core values of the district. Possesses practical and conceptual, analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills. This position requires the knowledge and application of the 10 leadership standards established for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals Administrative and Supervisory Professional Growth System.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree required. In addition, Master's degree from an accredited college or university or at least five years of relevant work experience. Training, coursework, and/or experience with professional learning, adult learning practices, organizational change, antiracism, equity, and inclusion. Administrative and/or supervisory experience preferred. Experience in developing and delivering effective adult learning; coaching district-level leaders; and coordinating collaboration among stakeholders with different experiences and perspectives. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland certification requirements for Administrator I certification or five years of relevant experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent extended day work required. Leading and attending evening meetings with stakeholder groups or attending or presenting at evening Board of Education.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leads the visioning, coordination, and implementation of a reimagined districtwide professional learning process through best practices and new, effective methods of engaging stakeholders, MCPS leadership and staff. 2. Continuously and proactively evaluates the success and impact of the reimagined professional learning program, regularly reports effectiveness to MCPS leadership, and modifies approaches, tools and methods to improve overall success of the program. 3. Creates a core committee of leaders from the departments that provide professional learning to develop a coordinated plan to ensure foundational structures across all professional learning. 4. Develops a knowledge base of research that explains best practices for effective, antiracist, inclusive professional learning that leads to MCPS meeting its goals. 5. Leads the Joint Professional Learning Committee to create a systemwide vision, process, and evaluation for ongoing and future professional learning. 6. Supports the development and learning of the Antiracist System-Wide Training Team. 7. Consults with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure all leaders have the skills and knowledge needed to understand, evaluate, and support professional learning across the district. 8. Develops tools that can be used by everyone leading professional learning in MCPS. 9. Maintains knowledge and awareness of current events and trends impacting the district, education and staff, and takes measures to incorporate new professional development opportunities to address changing needs.
