SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The Director of Equity Initiatives reports directly to the Chief of Strategic Initiatives. The Director supervises and directs the work of the Equity Initiatives Unit, and in alignment with the Board of Education's Strategic Plan, coordinates the district-wide goal of becoming an antiracist, equitable, and inclusive school district where outcomes are not predictable by race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status. The Director collaborates with senior leadership, leaders from all departments, and all stakeholder groups to: support the system-wide work to address the results of the Antiracist System Audit; identify the policies and practices that contribute to inequitable outcomes and experiences for students, staff, and families; create a culture throughout the district where all students, families, and staff feel safe, valued, seen, heard, and successful, regardless of their race, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, language, citizenship status, or physical and cognitive abilities; develop antiracist, equitable, and inclusive policies and practices that are embedded in all offices, departments, and schools as well as structures for accountability; identify and overcome the beliefs, practices, and policies that are barriers to hiring and retaining a workforce that more closely reflects the diversity of MCPS students; create and implement products, resources, tools, and professional learning that build the capacity of all leaders and staff to develop and demonstrate antiracist, equitable, and inclusive practices. The Director of Equity manages and is accountable for human, physical, and financial resources with the goal of maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit; directs the completion of program statistics and ensures development of appropriate reports, regulations, and related directives; assists with planning short- and long-term objectives for central services and schools; oversees the recruitment, screening, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of personnel assigned to the unit; provides guidance and assistance to full-time, part-time, and/or hourly employees, as assigned; may serve as point of contact for the Board of Education, public entities, and the business community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: A thorough understanding of antiracism, equity, inclusion, and organizational change, and how these concepts and practices relate to Pre-K-12 education. Demonstrated experience: implementing a safe and productive organizational culture to co-create antiracist, equitable, and inclusive practices and policies with leaders, staff, students, families, and community members; creating effective adult learning; coaching district and school-based leaders; communicating to diverse audiences; and facilitating groups with diverse experiences and beliefs. Possesses excellent skills in program and personnel evaluation and human relations. Beliefs and actions reflect the mission, vision, and core values of the district. This position requires the knowledge and application of the six leadership standards established for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals Administrative and Supervisory Professional Growth System.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited college or university or relevant work experience. Training, coursework, and/or experience with antiracism, equity, and inclusion. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland certification requirements for Administrator I certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Attendance at evening Board of Education and other school system meetings.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consults with central leadership to design, plan, provide resources, and evaluate professional development to lead for equity; Oversees the Antiracist Audit Steering Committee and coordinates the development and implementation of action steps that result from the audit; Coaches district and school-based leaders to address both acute and long-term challenges on system-wide work groups and project teams as an advocate for the inclusion of antiracist, equitable, and inclusive educational practices; serves as the MCPS representative to local, state, and national organizations and advocacy groups that promote equitable; oversees the ongoing development of communication tools such as the EquityMatters! Newsletter, online modules, Equity Matters Dialogue, and the Equity Initiatives Unit's webpage. Performs related work as required.
