Assistant Director, Division of Maintenance

WORKING TITLE: Assistant Director, Division of Maintenance GRADE: N MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Assists the director, division of maintenance, in carrying out the following functions: Performing strategic and operational business planning; Managing division-wide facility maintenance operations; Planning, preparing, submitting, and managing execution of annual operating and capital budgets; Managing division-wide human resource functions to include recruiting, testing, interviewing, and selecting personnel for assignments and/or advancement, plus other personnel management actions; Managing, supervising, overseeing, observing, and evaluating division staff and managers of subordinate maintenance depots; Monitoring the status of facilities and maintaining positive, responsive, and collaborative relationships with customers, stakeholders, senior officials, labor unions, and other involved offices and/or interested parties; Managing and reporting emergency maintenance responses and actions to help keep schools open, safe, and functional; Managing the Shady Grove Depot and staff; Performing special assignments and projects; Representing the director when required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: This position requires knowledge and application of the six leadership standards established for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP) Administrative and Supervisory (A&S) Professional Growth System (PGS). Possesses extensive knowledge and experience in facility maintenance planning and management through a combination of education, training, and experience. Possesses knowledge and experience in general management of business operations (above first line supervision), with abilities to lead, train and professionally develop subordinate leaders and staff. Possesses and displays positive leadership traits, good people skills, and competent oral and written communications skills. Possesses skills and abilities to manage a wide range of professional disciplines in a high-tempo operational environment. Possesses skills and abilities to use a personal computer and common office software to prepare documents, spreadsheets, and presentations (familiarity with databases is desirable).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Possesses a bachelors degree in engineering, the sciences, business, or other related field. (Exceptions may be made for extensive levels of training, knowledge and experience in facilities maintenance management and related general management.) Possesses excellent knowledge and experience in facility maintenance management, and related general management. Work history reflects progressively more responsible assignments, including positions above the level of first line supervision.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver¿s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Occasional requirements to lift items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; Occasional requirements to climb a ladder in order to perform facility inspections.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Occasional requirements to work overtime, to work from home, to attend evening meetings, and/or to respond to facility emergencies with little or no prior notice.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitors, oversees, and manages day-to-day division operations, frequently collaborating with subordinate leaders and staff, senior leaders, customers, and stakeholders.
Manages, supervises, and professionally develops subordinate leaders and staff through a combination of training, observation, coaching, counseling, mentoring, and evaluation activities.
Prepares, reviews, and processes correspondence, evaluations, operational and fiscal reports, budget documents, estimates, and projections.
Collaborates with the director and staff on all aspects of business planning, operations, and organizational management, including oversight of a wide range of personnel recruiting, testing, interviewing, and selection activities.
Assists in planning, preparing, submitting, and managing execution of annual operating and capital budgets.
Reviews and approves fiscal reports and related actions essential to sustaining business operations.
Responds to emergencies.
Performs related work and special assignments or projects when required.
