Director, Teacher Leadership Unit

WORKING TITLE: Director, Teacher Leadership Unit GRADE: P MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, coordinates work related to teacher leadership, primarily the staff development teachers, content specialists, and resource teachers; and provides professional learning support to schools and teams in developing the knowledge and skills related to school improvement and rigorous instructional practices. Assists teacher leaders in accessing and using research in order to select appropriate strategies to improve student learning. Works directly with the directors of school support and improvement and the equity unit to align messages and professional learning intended to be taken back into the schools. Works with principals, teachers, teacher leaders, employee associations, and all MCPS offices to coordinate the delivery of priority professional learning. Supervises a unit of instructional specialists who develop and deliver professional learning as well as provide coaching to leadership teams in schools.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of adult learning theory; structures, venues, and strategies for effective professional learning; change management; facilitation of high-performing teams; organizational and professional learning theories and trends; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs. Knowledge of the school improvement process including conducting a root cause analysis; identifying an appropriate instructional focus; developing, implementing, and monitoring a professional learning action plan; and collecting and analyzing a variety of data to monitor progress. Knowledge of equitable and culturally relevant teaching practices. Proven leadership and management ability; strong communication, interpersonal, and data analysis skills. Proven skill as a professional developer, coach, and facilitator. Knowledge of the teacher professional growth systems and the evaluation criteria.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters in professional development, educational curriculum, administration, or related field. Five years successful teaching experience and successful experience in staff development or related field. Administrative and supervisory certification and three years of administrative/supervisory experience. Experience designing and modifying teacher leader programs; integrating technology into professional learning programs to promote collaborative and differentiated professional learning; and training in facilitation skills, practices, and techniques. Completion of OAT 1 and 2.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements for administration/supervision or Administrator I.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Availability to work evenings and weekends to attend meetings, to observe and conduct professional learning, and to attend conferences and other personal professional development events.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads the program content and strategies designed for teacher leaders including staff development teachers, content specialists, and resource teachers.

Collaborates with principals and teachers associations and representatives to ensure effectiveness of professional learning.

Designs programs and experiences for teacher leaders to deepen their knowledge and skills of professional learning and the analysis of student learning data, collaborative interpretation of results, and application of findings to improve teaching and learning.

Coordinates macro and micro professional learning opportunities for principals and school teams to ensure knowledge base and common language.

Coordinates priorities and the work of the teacher leaders.

Assists, as appropriate, with teacher leaders and their career lattice projects.

Observes and evaluates staff assigned to the teacher leadership unit using the MCPS Teacher professional growth system standards.

Collects and analyzes data to evaluate the effectiveness of organizational structures to improve educational practices and student learning and adjusts structures according to outcomes.

Serves as a member of the deputy superintendent's leadership team.

Serves as the account manager for the teacher leadership unit.

Serves on relevant work groups and task forces.

Performs related duties as needed.
