WORKING TITLE: Director, Student Wellness Initiatives GRADE: P MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the chief operating officer, the director will play a vital role in student¿s well-being in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Serves as a key leader and advocate for a comprehensive and integrated approach to student health and wellness. Serves on wellness-related student advisory boards or committees and facilitates the development of local school wellness committees. Engages with school and district leaders in areas of nutrition training, food insecurity and legislative advocacy. Coordinates the MCPS Wellness Committee and will be an active member of the School Health Council, as well as other wellness-related County committees, such as the Obesity Prevention Committee, providing nutritional guidance and expertise aligned with USDA nutritional regulations for Child Nutrition Programs and provisions of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. Provides critical leadership in coordinating the activities as outlined in JPG-RA Wellness: Physical and Nutritional Health regulation. Actively assesses the health and wellness needs of all students, including underrepresented populations. Collaborates with staff in the Office of the Chief Operating Officer (OCOO), the Division of Food and Nutrition Services, Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs (OCIP), the Office of School Performance (OSSI), and the Office of Student and Family Support and Engagement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of nutrition as it relates to the health and well-being of children, adolescents, and adults. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local guidelines and regulations related to food service, nutrition and food technology. Ability to prepare and deliver training programs, as well as facilitate effective meetings and committees. Ability to develop and present nutrition programs for small and large groups. Thorough knowledge of institutional food service procedures, practices, and equipment; thorough knowledge of MCPS food service operations. Strong communication and human relations skills. Ability to develop effective working relationships with administrators, school staffs, parents, and others.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree required. University degree in dietetics, nutrition, health and wellness, or a related field. Five years demonstrated experience presenting informational/training programs to a diverse audience required.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Registered Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Use of personal car required. Evening and weekend work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides support to schools as they implement all facets of the JPG-RA regulation and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

Assists in the Division of Food and Nutrition Services (DFNS) and Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs (OCIP) training programs for instructional staff to integrate nutrition and wellness in the curriculum and student learning experience.

Provides classroom instruction, as requested.

Writes newsletter items for MCCPTA, EAP, school principals, Office of Chief Operating Officer, Office of Communications and Office of Student and Family Support and Engagement.

Presents information at various meetings as requested.

Contributes to legislative platform and advocates on behalf of MCPS.

Attends and presents at County Council and General Assembly hearings as requested.

Develops lesson plans, training schedules, agenda, and handouts, schedules classroom meeting sites, advertises training schedule, and invites guest speakers as the need arises and reviews and revises current training materials as needed.

Collaborates with MCCPTA and schools as they create local school wellness committees.

Collaborates with non-profit partners in providing food to families in need, such as the Weekend Backpack Program and food pantries.

Collaborates with the Division of Food and Nutrition Services leadership to coordinate student wellness activities consistent with JPG-RA.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
