EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Works closely and collaboratively with the Associate Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services and with the community superintendents related to compliance with schools processes for discipline and change of school assignments.2.Supervises and evaluates unit staff. 3.Receives and responds to requests from principals for suspension appleals and expulsion of students for disciplinary reasons.4.Communicates and collaborates with staff in the Appeals/ Transfer Unit. 5.Works closely with staff, parents, and schools to identify appropriate interventions and programming for students who are repeatedly suspended, recommended for expulsion, court adjudicated, or unsuccessful in comprehensive school settings.6.Works cooperatively with school administrators, the Department of Student Services, and staff in central office departments to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of services to students and to support school management plans and school performance outcomes.7.Supports school, parent, and community efforts to prevent violence in schools and communities through consultation, mediation, and collaboration with other county agencies.8.Analyzes data to determine trends related to disciplinary issues and attendance issues and works to develop plans to address each.9.Collects, monitors, and analyzes data related to disciplinary actions of students and creates periodic data reports based on performance measures that reflect the work of the unit.10.Collaborates with Pupil Personnel Workers regarding case management. Responds to principal, parent, and staff inquiries regarding hearing decisions.11.Works with state and local agencies to support outreach efforts that enhance communication between the school system, schools, and communities.12.Conducts appeal hearings for students suspended for ten days or less and prepares related report and correspondence13.Reviews and makes decisions pertaining to student transfer applications and works with the Appeals/Transfer Team as appropriate.14.Assures that staff, principals, and teachers are informed of changes in laws, regulations, and policies in a timely manner.15.Provides training on a wide range of student service subject areas focusing on student discipline and due process.16.Represents the Department of Student Services and the Office of Special Education and Student Services on committees and task forces.17.Collaborates with county agencies (e.g., health and human services, department of social services, and juvenile services) to support student, staff, and parent needs.18.Collaborates with other MCPS offices to support the effective and consistent implementation of Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS), Educational Management Team (EMT), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes and procedures.19.Participates actively as a member of the leadership team of the associate superintendent for Special Education and Student Services and the Director.20.Performs related work as required.
