SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the dean, assists with administering and supervising the total virtual grades 7-12 school program, which operates during day and evening hours. The supervisor provides educational leadership for students and staff members consistent with the educational goals of the community. This position assists with hiring, supervising, and deploying staff as necessary to meet the academic, support, and social-emotional needs of staff and students in the virtual academy. The primary function of this position is to assist in leading the ongoing work to design, develop, implement, and monitor the grades 7-12 virtual academy, including defining roles, planning and coordinating programs, effecting change, and decision-making. The supervisor will take direction from the dean, and will work closely with all offices and all secondary school leadership to ensure all programs and supports are in alignment with MCPS policies, practices, and processes; and meet the needs of students participating in the program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) policies and procedures, the MCPS curriculum, and state and federal regulations and laws. Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and pupil services. Thorough understanding of highly effective instruction in a virtual space; interactive, inquiry-based instruction; student-centered learning; and assessment. Ability to utilize a variety of technological applications, learning systems, and databases. Knowledge of accountability measures and achievement data analysis. Knowledge of technology to support learning, data analysis, and communication. Demonstrated competence in staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation. Knowledge of effective practices for virtual and personalized instruction to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Ability to design and deliver professional development. Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Masters degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in supervision, educational administration, secondary school curriculum, or a closely related field. Five years of successful teaching experience; at least one of those years must be in MCPS. Three years of leadership experience, assistant school administrator, or central services administrator/central services instructional specialist; resume must provide evidence. Successful completion of Observation and Analysis of Teaching I preferred. Successful completion of Observation and Analysis of Teaching II either prior to or during the first year of assignment. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland certification requirements for Administrator I or secondary or special education principal and supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends. Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings, and other functions as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Shares responsibility for establishing and maintaining a welcoming environment that demonstrates respect for the students and families served by the school.
2. Solicits input from diverse stakeholder groups in a variety of ways (e.g., surveys, e-mails, phone calls, meetings, focus groups, discussions, advisory groups, etc.) to identify and solve problems and ensures input is analyzed and implemented for continuous improvement.
3. Responds equitably to all school and family community requests and works with staff and stakeholders to organize and celebrate differences in cultures through program materials and activities for students and families.
4. Works with the dean of the grades 7-12 school virtual academy to analyze, share, and use school and student achievement data to develop and implement the school improvement plan.
5. Works with the dean to implement systematic procedures to assess program effectiveness.
6. Coordinates with unit directors, supervisors, and coordinators, as well as school staff in order to ensure effective program delivery.
7. Assists the dean by interfacing with Career and Postsecondary Partnerships and external partners to create opportunities for students.
8. Helps to define and lead a shared vision and district plan for virtual learning.
9. Plans for and conducts staff meetings, professional development, training, steering committee meetings, and related activities.
10. Helps to recruit, interview, select, and supervise staff in the virtual academy.
11. Assumes responsibility for specific areas of administration and management assigned by the dean; uses administrative and management practices to promote the efficient and effective operation of the school.
12. Works with the dean to establish and maintain relationships with the PTA and other community organizations to ensure ongoing, two-way communication and initiate activities which foster productive parent and community involvement.1
3. Handles student behavior problems promptly and positively.
14. Works with the dean, teachers, parents, the Educational Management Team, and the Collaborative Problem-Solving Team to ensure appropriate programming for all students.
15. Assumes specific responsibilities assigned by the dean in the selection, orientation, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of staff.
16. Assists with planning and implementation of professional learning communities.
17. Prepares a variety of written reports and correspondence.
18. Assumes responsibility for operation of the school in the absence of the dean.
19. Performs related work as required.
