SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, coordinates and provides leadership for development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in middle and high school mathematics. Provides leadership for delivery of professional development for administrators, specialists, and classroom teachers. Monitors the implementation of the mathematics program through school visits, data analysis, and collaboration with other MCPS offices. Seeks feedback for essential program improvements and student achievement. Provides leadership in evaluation and selection of mathematics resources. Communicates the goals and aims of the mathematics program to the Board of Education, staff, and community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of current educational principles, best practices and procedures in development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in middle and high school mathematics. Knowledge of local, state and national standards and assessments and ability to apply them to development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in middle and high school mathematics. Knowledge of use of technology as an educational tool to support learning, multicultural instructional materials, and experience teaching across disciplines and with diverse populations. Ability to effectively work with staff, parents, and state and national colleagues to implement and monitor the mathematics program in diverse school settings. Excellent planning, organization, management, communications (oral and written) and human relations skills. Ability to prepare papers and presentations for a variety of audiences about the mathematics program.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from accredited college or university. Course work in mathematics curriculum supervision and administration. At least five years experience as a classroom teacher of mathematics. Successful recent leadership experience in assessing program needs, instructional planning, assessment development, and professional development.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Certificate in administration and supervision (Administrator I) and Secondary Mathematics
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Some extended day work required. Occasional attendance at evening BOE, PTA, and committee meetings.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under direction:

Leads the development and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in middle and high school mathematics to address
local and state mandates and priorities.

Supervises and evaluates mathematics instructional specialists in accordance with the MCPS Professional Growth System.

Keeps knowledgeable regarding ongoing and new program development. Reviews best practices, recent literature, and research studies and reports. Evaluates findings and suggests changes or modifications to improve existing programs. Applies information/results of research and studies to instructional program.

Develops and facilitates countywide meetings of liaison/resource/special teachers in mathematics.

Provides leadership in design and delivery of professional development for administrators, teachers, and support staff to implement mathematics curriculum and assessment.

Works with specialists and school staff in monitoring and evaluating implementation of the mathematics program; advises principals, resource teachers, and classroom teachers to support teaching and learning of mathematics.

Supervises the evaluation and selection of mathematics resources.

Prepares responses to requests for information; interprets the mathematics curriculum and instructional program to a variety of audiences; keeps abreast of latest research, developments, and techniques in mathematics teaching and learning; and maintains liaison with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), colleges and universities, appropriate professional organizations, and other groups or individuals who influence the quality or direction of the mathematics program.

Prepares required reports and maintains files, records of mathematics tasks, projects, and activities.

Collaborates with other MCPS offices and departments.

Participates in interviewing and hiring of mathematics specialists.

Under direction, performs other duties as assigned.
