SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director of systemwide athletics, the health and safety coordinator provides leadership, oversees, and coordinates the planning, implementation, monitoring and administration of the health and safety components of the interscholastic athletics program, including supervision of the athletic training program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, and best practices involving health and safety in athletics, including knowledge of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Knowledge of current research and trends in athletics. Ability to work effectively with central services, principals, athletics specialists, athletic coordinators, coaches, athletic trainers, community members and organizations to ensure accountability with systemwide processes and expectations. Ability to conduct effective meetings for a wide variety of groups. Ability to manage multiple tasks on short notice with ever-changing priorities. Ability to lead and manage 30 athletic trainers across the school system and plan and implement processes and procedures to promote the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, and other stakeholders. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Ability to evaluate data and effectiveness of health and safety aspects of the systemwide athletics program to make the necessary improvements and drive innovation.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university, preferably with course work dealing with athletic training and management of a comprehensive athletics program. A strong background and experience in athletics. Minimum of three years of successful experience as a certified athletic trainer, or similar athletic leadership position. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA) Board of Certification Athletic Trainer in good standing. Must currently possess or be eligible for State of Maryland Board of Physicians Athletic Training License and Evaluation and Treatment Protocols with Supervising Physician. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job, in various environments and work conditions. Standing, sitting, walking, jogging, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 lbs are essential functions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Evening and weekend work required especially during the preseason and postseason times of each sports season.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promotes the R.A.I.S.E. core values of the MCPS systemwide athletics program.

Oversees, coordinates and supervises all aspects of the systemwide athletic training program.

Assists in monitoring the overall athletics program to ensure compliance with NFHS, NATA, MPSSAA and MCPS policies and regulations regarding student-athlete health, safety, and well-being.

Ensures MCPS athletic trainers maintain current NATA Certifications, State of Maryland licenses, and that all protocols are up to date.
Promotes equity across the athletics program, to ensure practices and operations that support the core values of equity and access for all students.

Serves as the liaison for the systemwide Athletics Unit with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.

Distributes correspondence and other information to keep athletics specialists, athletic coordinators, coaches, athletic trainers, and athletic department personnel fully informed of all regulations and standards related to health, safety, and well-being.

Works collaboratively with appropriate central office and school personnel to develop and implement systemwide safety plans, consistent with MCPS policies and procedures, including concussions, heat acclimatization, and sudden cardiac arrest.

Plans and promotes strategies and programs related to mental health and character education for the systemwide athletics program and local school programs.

Plans, supports, and assists with training regarding the Emergency Action Plans for each school and athletic facility.

Develops, implements, and provides evaluation procedures for school system athletic trainers.

Oversees assigned distributed leadership committees to enhance and support the leadership of athletics specialists, athletic coordinators, and others to drive program growth and innovation.

Plans and leads systemwide trainings for coaches, athletic trainers, athletics specialists, athletic coordinators, student-athletes, and parents/guardians regarding health, safety, and well-being.

Collects and analyzes systemwide injury and rehabilitation data to drive ongoing improvement and treatment of student-athletes.

Coordinates and collaborates with local school personnel regarding the purchasing of medical and athletic training supplies, including the required and recommended supplies for each high school.

Creates and administers an athletic training support plan for the middle school athletics program, including the coordination of the athletic trainers who are assigned to support middle school athletics.

Creates and implements the emergency action plans for countywide championships and other postseason events.

Schedules athletic trainers to ensure maximal coverage at countywide and large-scale events.

Reviews and updates the athletic trainers¿ reference guide, to ensure each athletic trainer is educated on the latest policies and procedures.

Assists in selecting appropriate materials, supplies, and equipment, in order to maximize student-athlete health and safety.

Oversees and coordinates health and safety equipment, including AEDs, wet-bulb thermometers, and scales for wrestling.

Coordinates CPR/AED training for athletic department personnel.

Stays current in technological advances and research in the field, including attendance at state and national conferences as directed by the director of systemwide athletics.

Utilizes technological resources to promote the athletics program and effectively communicate with all stakeholders across the program regarding health and safety matters.

Administers all aspects of the Care and Prevention of Athletic Injury Course (PE 22), in collaboration with the compliance coordinator for systemwide athletics.

Visits school sites to meet with and support athletics specialists, athletic coordinators, athletic trainers, coaches, student-athletes, and parents/guardians.

Coordinates and leads the systemwide wrestling weight certifications on an annual basis.

Attends and assists with the administration of identified county, regional and state athletic contests.

Serves on a variety of MCPS and MPSSAA committees and workgroups related to student-athlete health, safety, and well-being.

Assists the director of systemwide athletics with conducting countywide meetings for athletic trainers, high school athletics specialists, middle school athletic coordinators, high school principals, and coaches.

Works collaboratively with MCPS offices, departments, divisions and units including the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Facilities Management, Safety and Security, Risk Management, Transportation, and Procurement.

Makes suggestions for the improvement of athletic standards and procedures and provides ongoing updates to the athletics handbooks and procedures, to ensure compliance with all local, state, and national rules and regulations.

Confers regularly with the director of systemwide athletics and other appropriate staff about matters pertaining to health, safety, and well-being.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
