SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, the coordinator leads and supports the Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12 general and choral music program, facilitates staff professional learning, coordinates countywide programs, and leads the development of curriculum in general and choral music. Ensures school-based and central services staff implement general and choral music curriculum standards, as defined by national and state program policies, procedures, curriculum, and professional learning standards. Ensures the selection of high-quality, equitable, and inclusive instructional materials, providing all students access to a rigorous and culturally responsive music education. In addition, engages district organizations to partner with MCPS to provide a robust general and choral arts curriculum. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: None SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequent extended day and/or weekend work required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of current educational principles, practices and procedures in program development, staff training, instruction and assessing program needs in general and choral music. Thorough knowledge of national and state general and choral music curriculum standards. Ability to effectively work and communicate with principals, specialists, teachers and state and national colleagues to implement and monitor the general/choral music instructional program in schools. Excellent human relations skills to support collaboration with local and community partners. Excellent planning, organization, management, communications (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Ability to prepare reports, memos, and presentations for the superintendent and Board of Education. Knowledge in grant writing and/or donation funding.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in general choral music and course work in curriculum, supervisory and administrative course work desirable. Five years outstanding teaching experience in general and choral music in public schools, Prekindergarten to Grade 12. Recent administrative or supervisory experience desirable and hiring qualified staff in the field. Successful recent leadership experiences in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation, and staff training; or other combinations of applicable training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position. Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability. Experience working with multiple schools to support countywide programs, preferred.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland certification requirements for Administrator I and in the assigned discipline. Completion of OAT I or II, or completion within one year of the position start date.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Manages the development and revision of the general and choral music instructional program to address local, state, and national mandates and standards.Works with school-based and central services staff members on implementation of program policies, procedures, curriculum, and professional learning as well as the facilitation of work with district partner organizations.Collaborates with other MCPS offices and departments and curriculum coordinators to develop integrated curricular units and assessments.Plans and manages curricular and instructional improvements and disseminates information about successful practices. Participates in the development of new and revised countywide assessments for general and choral music.Keeps up-to-date regarding research, developments, techniques, and new program development in general and choral music. Reviews recent literature and research studies and reports. Evaluates findings and suggests changes or modifications to improve existing programs.Plans and leads countywide meetings of general and choral music teachers.Provides leadership in design and delivery of in-service training activities to promote innovative teaching approaches and techniques. Provides support and guidance to in-service instructors and coordinators.Develops and conducts workshops and in-service training.Works with school staff in monitoring and evaluating implementation of the instructional program in general/choral music, advises principals, teacher leaders, and classroom teachers regarding instructionally related concerns, problems, and/or adjustments to new situations/curriculum.Develops and supervises the evaluation and selection of textbooks, instructional materials and equipment, collaborates in developing plans for new and renovated facilities; coordinates articulation of curriculum between grade and school levels.Develops proposals for outside funding to support program improvements.Collects data and prepares responses to requests for information; interprets the curriculum and instructional program to the Board, staff, parents, and community; maintains liaison with MSDE, colleges and universities, appropriate professional organizations, and other groups or individuals who influence the quality or direction of the general and choral instructional program.Plans and coordinates activities that involve parents, community, and business sector in support of curriculum/program development, implementation, and evaluation.Manages special countywide general and choral music programs, including cocurricular activities and makes presentations to interested staff and community groups.Prepares required reports and annual budget requests; manages expenditures and accounts for the general/choral program countywide activities; recommends allocation of grant funds according to need and best utilization; maintains files, records, and/or expenditure control.Participates in screening, interviewing, recommending placements, and hiring of general and choral music teachers.Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
