SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director of systemwide athletics, the media and promotions coordinator provides leadership, oversees and coordinates, publications, scheduling, marketing, and the promotions of all aspects of program operations. Leads and coordinates media content, including social media; organizes and updates program publications, such as handbooks and website content; manages awards and recognition activities, including the sportsmanship award program; and compiles historical records and content for the systemwide athletics program. Serves as the chief scheduler for systemwide athletics, including the construction of systemwide schedules utilizing a collaborative process that involves multiple stakeholders. Keeps abreast of local, state and federal law; current athletics operations, and best practices regarding education-based interscholastic athletics. Regularly collects staff data and analyzes multiple data points to inform timely marketing, celebration, and promotion of the systemwide athletics program. This is a centrally based position; however, site and school visits will be required, including multiple evening and weekend activities. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job, in various environments and work conditions. Standing, sitting, walking, jogging, and lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) are essential functions. Sometimes transporting materials to meetings and sites. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent evening and weekend activities, especially supervision of after school/weekend athletic activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the MCPS policies and procedures dealing with student athletics and knowledge of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Knowledge of current research and trends in athletics. Ability to work effectively with central services, principals, athletic directors, athletic coordinators, coaches, athletic trainers, student-athletes, community members and organizations to ensure effective media relations, comprehensive and informative publications, and the successful promotion of systemwide athletics. Ability to conduct effective and efficient meetings for a wide variety of groups. Ability to manage multiple tasks on short notice with ever-changing priorities. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Ability to manage multiple communications platforms, including email, written publications, website content, and social media platforms.Skilled with the development of a measurable learning progression that aligns with the needs of personnel and the district. Excellent skills with the development and delivery of media and social media content, publications and resources, and marketing and promotional initiatives. Ability to evaluate data and effectiveness of the media and promotions aspects of program operations. Skilled with facilitative processes and building consensus. Ability to effectively collaborate with multiple stakeholders to ensure complete and accurate schedules and accurate and concise informational resources for systemwide athletics. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Ability to routinely utilize current publications and platforms to promote program successes and promotions. Ability to work collegially with others, and effectively conduct large and small group trainings and meetings through in-person and virtual platforms and applications. Skilled with data analysis and ability to synthesize and present media and promotional content to a wide variety of stakeholders. Must be able to evaluate and understand data to assess effectiveness of scheduling, along with all aspects of media, marketing, and promotional initiatives.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university with course work in administration, media and communications, promotions and marketing, and/or supervision of a comprehensive athletics program. Minimum of three years of successful experience as a teacher, coach, media/marketing/promotions manager, and/or athletics administrator. Experience leading committees and preparing/implementing large meetings. Experience working with outside organizations and stakeholders, including officiating associations, municipal facility directors, local civic and municipal athletic associations, etc. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of the following national certification requirements through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA): Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) within first 6 months of hire, Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) within the first two years of hire, Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) within the first five years of hire. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Promotes the R.A.I.S.E. core values of the MCPS systemwide athletics program.Promotes equity across the athletics program, to ensure practices and operations that support the core values of equity and access for all students.Oversees and supervises the scheduling of systemwide athletic contests for both high schools and middle schools.Facilitates and leads scheduling committees and workshops, ensuring a collaborative approach that incorporates multiple stakeholder perspectives.Provides a comprehensive package of materials for dissemination by assisting in the planning, development, and distribution of publications, including the MCPS High School Athletics Handbook, the MCPS Middle School Athletics Handbook, the MCPS Cheerleading and Pompons Handbook, the MCPS Swimming and Diving Handbook, the MCPS Diving Handbook, the R.A.I.S.E. Report, the Officials Bulletin, and weekly reports for athletic directors and athletic coordinators.Ensures all athletic department resources and reference materials are current, relevant, and reflect a foundation built on inclusion, cultural responsiveness and antiracism.Ensures that information about the MCPS athletics program is available to the public in a timely and effective manner, as proactively as possible, by assisting in the planning, creation, and implementation of a comprehensive media and communications plan.Serves as the liaison to the department of communications and as the primary media content coordinator for the systemwide athletics program.Manages and implements all communications aspects of the systemwide athletics program, including weekly/bi-weekly communications, newsletters, websites, and social media platforms.Utilizes and monitors social media applications, websites, and technological resources to promote the athletics program and effectively communicate with all stakeholders across the program.Manages awards and recognition activities, including the sportsmanship award program.Oversees assigned distributed leadership committees to enhance and support the leadership of athletic directors, athletic coordinators, and others to drive program growth and innovation.Assists in developing direction and communication to sport directors, tournament directors, and multiple stipend personnel, to assist in the implementation of the interscholastic athletics program.Assists in the maintenance of a close and effective working relationship between the MCPS Department of Athletics, athletic directors, athletic coordinators, coaches, sport directors, and officials’ commissioners and assignors, regarding media, promotions, recognition, and celebration.Ensures that major special events such as county championships are promoted within the MCPS community.Creates and implements a communication plan and strategy to promote initiatives such as Coaches Appreciation Week, Officials Appreciation Week and Spirited Sportsmanship and Spectator Safety Week.Serves as the historian and compiles historical records and content for the systemwide athletics program, including team and individual champions.Coordinates and supervises student initiatives regarding program media, marketing, and promotions, including the coverage of key events, promotion of key information, and celebration of individual, team, school, and program accomplishments.Obtains and analyzes data, feedback, and information to drive operations surrounding media and marketing and applies appropriate improvements to increase effectiveness and promotions.Regularly and proactively communicates with appropriate central office personnel and contracted vendors to ensure synchronized and unified efforts in media, marketing, promotions, and other matters of shared interest.Coordinates communications and relations with the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, Maryland State Athletic Directors Association, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, and National Federation of State High School Associations.Handles special projects, other duties, and related activities as assigned by the director of systemwide athletics.Visits identified school sites to meet with athletic department personnel on behalf of the Department of Athletics.Attends and represents MCPS Athletics at community and stakeholder meetings, as appropriate.Represents MCPS Athletics on various county and state committees, as directed.Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
