EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates a knowledge of the needs, interests, and feelings of students with disabilities.Ensures the establishment and maintenance of a school philosophy and a special education program consistent with MOPS goals and policies, and in compliance with federal and state laws and policies for special education programs.Selects, orients, assigns, supervises, and evaluates staff to attain the objectives of the special education program and the MCPS Program of Studies. Utilizes human and material resources available to staff to attain the objectives of the educational program.Works with pupil personnel workers, psychologists, reading diagnostician, teacher/specialists, and other specialists to diagnose learning problems leading to limited educational performance and to make recommendations toward their solution.Conducts and assists conferences and meetings with parents and other community representatives.Serves as acting principal in the absence of the principal.Plans and provides for an environment which supports the educational program and maintains the mental and physical health and safety of students and staff.Uses administrative and management practices which promote the efficient and effective operation of the school.Assures the proper evaluation of student progress and of the effectiveness of the program to determine what practices or objectives to maintain or modify.Oversees the Individual Education Plan process for students.Strives to establish and maintain a school community which practices the principles of democracy, reflecting recognition of and respect for each individual.Shares responsibility for the total MCPS program.Identifies areas for personal professional growth, acquires appropriate skills and information, and applies them. Works directly with students regarding discipline, emotional, vocational or other needs.Assists with record reviews, transportation and food services.Develops and implements in-service programs especially geared to the unique needs of staff. Assists in the supervision of satellite programs.Performs other related duties as required.
