WORKING TITLE: Coordinator, Student Wellness Initiatives GRADE: N MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the associate superintendent of operations, Office of Operations, reports directly to the director of the department of materials management. Oversees and ensures compliance with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) requirements related to student wellness initiatives in MCPS. Primary function is to develop in-service training/professional learning for school staffs and to provide direct school-based support for all elementary, middle, and high schools in establishing comprehensive wellness committees/councils services to serve all students. Provides direct support to schools as they implement all facets of the JPG-RA regulation and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Serves on local school wellness-related student advisory councils/committees and facilitates the development of local school wellness committees. An active member of the MCPS Wellness Committee. Collaborates with other MCPS offices to coordinate and align system-wide wellness initiatives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive knowledge of nutrition as it relates to the health and well-being of children, adolescents, and adults. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local guidelines and regulations related to food service, nutrition and food technology. Exceptional ability to prepare and deliver training, professional development, and online learning as well as facilitate, effective school-based meetings and school-based committees as it relates to wellness initiatives. Maintains data on each school in the district and reports specific to the status of their implementation and maintenance of their wellness programs and committees, and provides bi-monthly status reports. Ability to present nutritional information as it relates to nutrition as outlined by JPG-RA for small and large groups at the school-based level. Strong communication and human relations skills. Ability to develop effective working relationships with administrators, school staffs, parents, and others.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor¿s degree in dietetics, nutrition, health and wellness, or a related fieldrequired. Five years successful experience in nutritional services with extensive experience presenting informational/training programs to a diverse audience required.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Registered Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Use of personal car required. Evening and weekend work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reviews and evaluates school-based Wellness committees and services for all elementary, middle, and high schools within the school district to assure provision of wellness committees/councils for students;

Develops lesson plans, training schedules, agenda, and handouts, schedules classroom meeting sites, advertises training schedule to staff and parents, and invites guest speakers as the need arises and reviews and revises current training materials consistently.

Creates templates for all schools, develops communications to support schools with wellness initiatives including agendas, surveys, fliers, and other communication tools.

Collaborates with the Division of Food and Nutrition Services Director to ensure that work with the Maryland State Department of Education, and related entities to assure implementation of local compliance with school wellness requirements and local school initiatives, including the triennial assessments as consistent with JPG-RA.

Assists the Director of the Division of Food and Nutrition Services (DFNS) and Office of Curriculum and Instructional Programs (OCIP) training programs for school-based instructional staff to integrate nutrition and wellness in the curriculum and student learning experience.

Reviews and provides recommendations and/or updates/changes directly to MCPS Wellness policy to both the Director of DMM and Director of DFNS and procedures in accordance with regulations and best practices in school-based wellness initiatives as it relates to school-based wellness committees.

Provides technical assistance and professional development opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school leaders, in wellness committees/councils district-wide.

Creates systems to monitor to track school system progress in supporting the health and well-being of wellness programs in all schools for all students, and plans to support schools not meeting the wellness initiative targets.

Utilizes local school data to make recommendations for programmatic offerings to schools for wellness initiatives.

Works with the Director of DMM and Director of DFNS in writing grant applications, manages monetary funds, and is well-informed about financial policies and procedures, and systems related to wellness initiatives singularly.

Coordinates and leads implementation of the system-wide wellness professional development to local schools, PTAs, at the school-based level.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
