SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the director of the Equity Initiatives Unit, coordinates and provides leadership for school-based and district-wide Study Circles and equity initiatives that build the capacity of schools and offices to address institutional barriers that create outcomes that are predictable by race. Provides leadership and staff development training for administrators, specialists, school staff, support professionals, and parent and community partners. Collaborates with other departments and offices in the planning, facilitating, and implementation of Study Circles and equity/antiracism action steps. The coordinator will also organize and provide feedback on the professional learning delivered by equity unit specialist.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Extensive experience and knowledge of: facilitation and group process; the current research, principles, and practices of adult learning; equity and antiracism and other related bodies of research; professional and staff development strategies and models; the school improvement process. Experience using technology to support learning and engagement of staff, students, and stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively with school system staff, county government staff, parent groups, business, and community organizations focused on student learning and wellbeing. Ability to assess program needs and plan program implementation. Ability to support the preparation of papers and presentations for the superintendent and Board of Education. Excellent planning, organization, management, written and oral communication, and human relation skills required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in education, curriculum, school administration, or related field. Three years outstanding classroom or central services experience required; administrative or supervisory experiences desirable. Demonstrated leadership and broad experience in developing professional learning opportunities, facilitating conversations about race and racism; and experience working effectively with diverse staff, students, parents, and community groups. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Must meet Maryland Certification requirements for supervisors and principals or Administrator 1 (or Administrative/Supervisor coursework leading to Administrator 1 certification with time determined by MSDE guidelines) and in the assigned discipline.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent extended day work required. Attendance at evening Board of Education meetings, as well as meetings with community groups and PTA groups.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates Study Circles and equity initiatives training and programs to promote dialogue and professional learning to address and interrupt the racial predictability in student outcomes, parent engagement, and wellbeing. Develops structures that link and focus efforts of school system offices, schools, and community stakeholders to build capacity of staff and students to engage in dialogue about race and racism and its impact on teaching, leading, and learning. Ensures alignment with the core value of equity and the antiracist system audit and other equity initiatives. Organizes the design, planning, and implementation of Study Circles in schools and offices, provides coaching and feedback on the implementation of the Study Circles process and equity/antiracism professional learning. Supports the implementation of the ACA Nondiscrimination, Equity, and Cultural Proficiency policy. Plans and leads staff development activities for professional and support staff. Collects data and prepares written and oral responses to requests for information about programs and special projects; interprets information to the Board of Education, staff, parents, and the community. Keeps abreast of current literature, research, developments, techniques related to racial equity and antiracism. Prepares required reports, correspondence, and annual budget requests and recommends allocation of funds to support the work of the unit. Supervises and evaluates Equity Initiatives staff. Collaborates with community groups to engage in dialogue and actions that lead to the disruption of institutional barriers that impede student success. Represents the Equity Initiatives Unit on task forces and committees.
