SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: The communications coordinator leads and coordinates communications activities and initiatives concerning matters of public interest, public relations and media outreach. The coordinator creates and implements communications strategies that align with MCPS vision and values; confers with the Department of Communications leadership to ensure that the school district's messaging and strategies are consistent as appropriate. Creates and implements focused communication plans, materials and messaging to represent the system's activities, events and initiatives to ensure transparent, accurate and timely communications. The coordinator researches, develops, writes and edits press releases and other communications content aimed at media and external and internal audiences. The coordinator proactively maintains knowledge of district and community events, incidents, activities and news and is responsible for: recommending and drafting timely and accurate messages and content on behalf of MCPS. The coordinator collaborates with members of the Department of Communications to manage social media planning and messaging, website content updates, media relations and events support. The coordinator provides strategic communications support to the communications department, including crisis communications, social media strategy, and integrated communications and public relations strategy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for a variety of audiences. Thorough knowledge of effective communication methods and strategies and ability to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders and diverse audiences. Extensive, proven knowledge of various social media platforms and other communication mediums, including print and video. Extensive knowledge of comprehensive communication plan development and implementation processes, ability to effectively collaborate and work with others. Excellent planning, organization, project management, communications (oral and written) and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing or related discipline required. Master's degree preferred; course work or experience in political science, public education or a related field preferred. Minimum of three years of professional experience creating, managing and successfully implementing communication strategies for a mid- to large-sized organization. Successful experience in assessing communication needs, outreach plan development, project implementation required. Other combinations of education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in this position may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Ability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as required and office needs. May be required to use personal vehicle to travel to county or state events. Mileage reimbursement processes apply.

Ensures that messaging is current, accurate, timely and represents MCPS' core values.

Under supervision, develops strategies and creates, coordinates and implements short-, mid-, and long-term communication plans.

Maintains current knowledge of district's activities and community events, incidents and news; recommends communication strategies and disseminates effective, accurate and timely messages and materials to stakeholders.

Assists in the writing and distribution of approved messages, including crisis-related messaging, through correspondence, statements, press releases, social media, news media/reporters and other means as needed.

Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with key offices and MCPS leaders to ensure cohesive and accurate messaging.

Maintains awareness and knowledge of social media applications and trends.

Researches media coverage of MCPS and assists in the development of strategies based on the research to improve the messaging

Evaluates the effectiveness of communication strategies and improves methods, processes and practices as needed.

Assists in creating presentations for events, meetings or targeted audiences as requested.

Develops metrics and implements specific instruments to measure customer satisfaction. Analyzes results and makes recommendations to improve communication and public relations based on analysis.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
