WORKING TITLE: Interpreting Services Coordinator GRADE: G MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction, supervises the sign language interpreter and cued speech transliteration services for students who deaf or hard of hearing (D/HOH). Work of the class involves responsibility for coordinating and managing interpreter services to students, including daily revision of interpreter schedules/assignments to provide for constantly changing student and staff needs. Workers advise both mainstream teachers and interpreters on the role of the educational interpreter; provide ongoing interpreter training; interview, recommend selection, recommend assignment, and evaluate the performance of Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program interpreters; and resolve day-to-day problems involved in the interpreting services program. An employee in this classification is expected to operate under general instructions/guidelines which require the use of considerable judgment and exercise of initiative in carrying out program duties and responsibilities. The more complex problems and issues and policy matters are referred to the supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the field of interpreting, including sign language, oral, and cued speech interpreting. Thorough knowledge and understanding of deaf education and culture. Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum K to 2. Considerable ability to work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and to work harmoniously with and provide a broad range of assistance to the instructional staff. Ability to effectively coordinate and supervise Interpreters for the Hearing Impaired I & II. Excellent expressive and receptive interpreting skills. Excellent human relations & communications skills. Knowledge and application of the six leadership standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP/MCBOA) Professional Growth System (PGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school and successful completion of an interpreter trainer training program. Bachelor's degree preferred. Considerable successful classroom interpreting experience required, with experience at both elementary and secondary levels preferred. Supervisory training and experience. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an interpreter or translator certificate from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Comprehensive skills certificate from RID and Level III Transliteration certificate from the National Cued Speech Association (NCSA) desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required of the duties of the position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) A large portion of the interpreter scheduling is done at night and during weekends.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

IInterviews interpreter applicants and makes recommendations for hiring to the Supervisor, Programs for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Observes D/HOH students, interpreters, and teachers to make recommendations regarding appropriate interpreter services.

Provides frequent feedback to interpreters on interpreting skills and effective interpreting techniques.

Counsels interpreters on problems encountered. Evaluates interpreters, using formal MCPS evaluation procedures.

Provides students with ongoing training regarding the effective use of interpreters.

Provides teachers and all school staff with ongoing training to help them work effectively with interpreters in their classrooms.

Develops training programs and trains interpreters in skills development and in MCPS policies and procedures.

Schedules interpreters into classes and subjects according to student needs; responds to special and urgent interpreting needs by rescheduling, reassigning and using temporary interpreters.

Schedules after-school interpreting as needed.

Meets regularly with interpreters, and other D/HOH program staff, to facilitate planning and service delivery.

Works closely with the Supervisor, Programs for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing on behalf of student mainstreaming.

Represents the Supervisor at meetings, conferences and workshops, as required. Occasionally handles student interpreting assignments, as required.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
