EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures the smooth and efficient operation of all elements of depot transportation services. Establishes and revises routes and schedules for buses serving schools; meets with principal and/or parents and other public groups to solve problems. Ensures prompt investigation of student disciplinary problems, personally handling the more serious problems, and takes or recommends action to eliminate such problems. Regularly observes transportation cluster managers, bus route supervisors, bus operators and bus attendants within area, insuring conformity to safe driving practices, established routes, and prescribed schedules; participates in bus inspections as required; handles the more serious problems/concerns of transportation cluster managers, bus route supervisors, bus operators and bus attendants. As needed, holds meetings with transportation cluster managers, bus route supervisors, bus operators and bus attendants for such purposes as safety briefings, schedule or route changes, and resolving problems at one or more schools. Meets with other members of the Transportation Department staff for problem-solving and planning purposes including tracking and reporting bus operator and bus attendant need for substitute coverage. Reviews and forwards all reports and summaries prepared by bus operators; is responsible for preparation of payroll data; completes required reports as necessary. Coordinates with schools and central offices, outside agencies and others to improve safety, efficiency, and economy of transportation services. Investigates accidents and makes recommendations regarding responsibility of operatorsEnsures adherence to MCPS and state mandated safety requirements and procedures. May operate a school bus in unusual or emergency situations. Is responsible for ensuring that all employees in their area of responsibility maintain the COMAR requirements each year. Prepares and executes two meetings yearly with all depot transportation personnel (October and January). Coordinates and participates in public meetings regarding transportation information, such as PTA and community meetings. Performs other public relation duties. Serves as a human relations specialist, handling conflicts with bus operators/attendants, school staff, parents, students, etc. Organizes and oversees bus evacuation drills and bus inspection. Is responsible for annual bus route reviews and investigations of unsafe route conditions. Maintains road and bridge safety inspections and checks railroad crossing areas. Serves as a member of the Inclement Weather Team. Participates in Accident Review Board hearings. Maintains liaison with Montgomery County Police School Safety Coordinator. Reviews new school sites for traffic signs and conducts overall safety review with Montgomery County Traffic Engineering Division. Is responsive to community safety concerns; editorializes monthly safety newsletter. Responsible for evaluating walk and ride areas near schools and examining bus stop and walking areas for unsafe conditions. Performs related work as required.
