WORKING TITLE: Instructional Specialist, Staff Development Specialist GRADE: BD MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION; PHYSICAL DEMANDS; AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Summary Description: Under direction, provides a wide variety of supports to meet the needs of individual schools related to system wide goals, priorities and initiatives; assists in training and coaching staff development teachers and school leadership teams in the knowledge and skills related to teacher and school leadership, including, but not limited to effective teams, facilitation of effective meetings, school improvement planning process, change management, coaching, and problem-solving/decision-making processes; performs a wide variety of professional development roles, including, but not limited to: trainer, coach, consultant, resource provider, facilitator, project manager. Physical Demands: Must be able to move materials/equipment to and from different training sites. Special Requirements: May be required to attend evening Board of Education meetings or conduct evening meetings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES: Understanding and demonstration of highly effective instruction; knowledge of MCPS curriculum and various forms of assessment; understanding of the SDT position and job-embedded staff development; development of grade level/department/interdisciplinary teams, and school leadership teams in a continuous improvement organization; knowledge of school improvement processes, including analysis of data, developing and monitoring professional development; knowledge of MCPS goals/initiatives; experience planning, delivering, and monitoring both face-to-face and online professional development for adults; strong and engaging skills as trainer, facilitator, and coach; interest in and ability to work collaboratively on a high performing team. This position requires the knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Education Training Experience:MEQ or MA from accredited college or university with emphasis on teaching, school leadership, curriculum, and/or instruction; minimum seven years successful teacher level experience; Extensive outstanding experience as a classroom teacher; demonstrated leadership in supporting teachers, the school improvement process, and/or system goals and initiatives; demonstrated experience planning and delivering professional development; excellent human relations skills.Certificate License:Holds a current Maryland state standard and advanced professional certificate in a teaching area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Example Duties:1.Project management, including developing time lines, including appropriate stakeholders, design and facilitation of effective meetings, development of materials, and logistical considerations related to the development and delivery of training plans on a variety of topics2.Facilitation of problem-solving/decision-making processes3.Development training plans for both face-to-face and online professional development based on knowledge of adult learner theory and knowledge of MCPS goals, priorities, and initiative.4.Trainer and Co-Trainer for teacher leaders and school leadership teams5.Coach/Consultant/Resource Provider/Catalyst for Change for teacher leaders (specifically, staff development teachers) and school leadership teams6.Support to schools in the development and monitoring of the school improvement process, including data analysis and aligning the professional development plan to the goals in the School Improvement Plan (SIP) as well as monitoring the professional development to determine impact on teaching and learning7. Performs related work and other duties as required.
