SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the local school athletics specialist and principal, and the health and safety coordinator for systemwide athletics, administers the athletic training program in each high school by providing comprehensive athletic health care including injury prevention, injury rehabilitation, and education of stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, and best practices involving health and safety in athletics. Demonstrated proficiency in implementation of acute treatment protocols based upon assessment findings and the patient's clinical presentation. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to administer appropriate hands-on services for student-athletes, including treatment, rehabilitation, and first response to injuries. Knowledge of current research and trends in athletics and athletic training. Ability to work effectively with principals, athletics specialists, coaches, community members and organizations to ensure accountability with systemwide processes and expectations. Ability to conduct effective meetings for a wide variety of groups. Ability to manage multiple tasks on short notice with ever-changing priorities. Ability to plan and implement processes and procedures to promote the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, and other stakeholders. Must have the ability to successfully uphold to the six evaluation standards for athletic trainers, which include: being committed to student-athletes and to their athletic program; maintaining knowledge in the field and effectively providing services to student-athletes; effectively managing the program and establishing positive relationships with stakeholders; assessing and evaluating injuries, providing immediate care, and administering appropriate treatment and rehabilitation protocol; maintain a commitment to continuous improvement and professional development; and exhibiting a high degree of professionalism. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with course work dealing with athletic training and management of a comprehensive athletics program. 1-2 years of progressively more responsible clinical experience as a certified athletic trainer preferred. Master's degree in athletic training preferred.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA) Board of Certification Athletic Trainer in good standing. Current or eligible State of Maryland Board of Physicians Athletic Training License and Evaluation and Treatment Protocols with Supervising Physician. Current CPR and First Aid Certification Required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job, in various environments and work conditions. Standing, sitting, walking, jogging, and lifting heavy objects are essential functions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Evening and weekend work required especially during the preseason and postseason times of each sports season. Required to attend school meetings, programs, contests and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promotes the R.A.I.S.E. core values of the MCPS systemwide athletics program.

Oversees and supervises all aspects of the local school athletic training program.

Fosters and maintains appropriate relationships with staff and student-athletes.

Assists in monitoring the local school athletics program to ensure compliance with NFHS, NATA, MPSSAA and MCPS policies and regulations regarding student-athlete health, safety, and well-being.

Promotes equity across the athletics program, to ensure practices and operations that support the core values of equity and access for all students.

Serves as the liaison between the local school and the health and safety coordinator for systemwide athletics.

Distributes correspondence and other information to keep athletics specialists, coaches, and athletic department personnel fully informed of all regulations and standards related to health, safety, and well-being.

Works collaboratively with appropriate school personnel to develop and implement systemwide safety plans, consistent with MCPS policies and procedures, including concussions, heat acclimatization, and sudden cardiac arrest.

Reviews and assesses student-athlete pre-participation physicals, in consultation with the school nurse to promote safe participation.

Renders first aid and emergency care during practices and contests.

Performs preventative taping, bracing, wrapping, and padding of injured areas.

Coordinates CPR/AED training for coaches and athletic staff.

Assists the athletics specialist with tasks to support the overall administration of the local school athletics program.

Oversees and manages athletic training facilities and equipment, to ensure safe and sanitary conditions in compliance with county, state, and national guidelines.

Plans and promotes strategies and programs related to mental health and character education for the local school program.

Plans, supports, and assists with training regarding the Emergency Action Plans for the school and each athletic facility.

Collects and injury and rehabilitation data to drive ongoing improvement and treatment of student-athletes.

Under the direction of the athletics specialist, coordinates purchasing of medical and athletic training supplies, including the required and recommended supplies for the school.

Oversees and coordinates health and safety equipment, including AEDs and wet-bulb thermometers.

Fits braces, guards, mouth pieces, and other protective devices, consulting with the athletic staff as necessary concerning proper fit.

Attends and assists with the administration of identified county, regional and state athletic contests.

Participates in systemwide trainings, as directed by the systemwide athletics coordinator of health and safety.

Implements COVID-19 protocols and procedures, in alignment with the Return to R.A.I.S.E. Plan for MCPS Athletics.

Maintains accurate records of injuries, treatments and provides appropriate insurance claim forms for sports injuries treated by a physician, utilizing school system approved software and processes.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
