WORKING TITLE: Instructional Specialist, Transition GRADE: BD MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the transition supervisor, provides transition-related support and training to secondary students with disabilities, MCPS staff, parents, and private and public agencies. Assists in the development of training to enhance the effective transition of students with disabilities from school to adult living.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of transition legislation and programming. Knowledge of current research and trends in transition services with special emphasis on appropriate culturally competent curriculum, instructional practices, and assessment. Ability to work effectively with administrators, principals and teachers in providing innovative transition-related activities, and providers including both public and private agencies. Ability to plan and develop professional development training and collaborate with other departments and agencies. Knowledge of adult services and skill in promoting community partnerships. Excellent organizational, written and oral communications and human relations skills. This position requires the knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in secondary special education. Course work in transition, counseling or career education desirable. Five years successful experience working with secondary students with varied disabilities required. Experience conducting professional development for a variety of audiences preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Completion of OAT I required.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements for an Advanced Professional Certificate in secondary special education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Frequent evening and occasional weekend work required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides instructional program support to the off-school site LFI classes.

Develops, coordinates, and implements in-service programs for various transition audiences.

Coordinates professional development with other MCPS and DHHS departments and divisions.

Supports partnerships between high schools and other non-profits.

Assists in data collection and analysis for program improvement and development.

Provides direct support to transition support teachers.

Performs related work and other duties as required.
