WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Middle School GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the middle school principal, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for adolescent students. Working with interdisciplinary teams, provides a school culture conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of adolescents to ensure success for every student. Supervises middle school students in a variety of school-related settings. Communicates and collaborates with middle school students, staff, parents, and community. Develops, selects, and differentiates instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all middle school students. Maintains appropriate records, follows required procedures and practices, and uses data analysis to monitor student achievement. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of adolescent development, content expertise, and MCPS curriculum and policies. Commitment to the belief that all students can learn characterized by high content and high expectations for all learners. Ability to use a variety of instructional and behavioral management strategies appropriate to the needs of middle school adolescents, and techniques integrating reading, writing, math, and technology throughout the content areas. Ability to self-reflect on instructional practices and personal interactions for continuous improvement. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff, students, parents, and community demonstrating organizational agility. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills. Commitment to young adolescents serving as an advocate, a role model, and a supporter of diversity (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, developmental differences, learning styles, and exceptionalities). Knowledge and application of the six performance standards that have been established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS), and the Supporting Services (SEIU) Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university with knowledge of adolescent learner.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements in appropriate field of education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of middle school adolescents to ensure Success for Every Student.

On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each middle school student to achieve learning objectives.

Provides an interdisciplinary instructional program to meet the needs of all middle students.

Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of supervisor.

Guides the learning process toward the fidelity of implementation of the middle school curriculum.

Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of middle school student needs, requirements of MCPS curriculum, and knowledge of adolescent growth and development.

Plans and utilizes interdisciplinary instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each middle school student to achieve success.

Diagnoses the exceptionalities of middle school students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central staff as required. Provides input when necessary to middle school student individual education plans.

Takes all necessary and safety precautions to protect middle school students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, MCPS policy and administrative regulation.

Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing middle school student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure in a fair and just manner.

Under reasonable term, is accessible to middle school students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.

Establishes relationships with teams, colleagues, students, parents and community in a culture of respect.

Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraeducators, teacher assistants, and volunteers. May evaluate the job performance of paraeducators or assistants with department heads and/or administrators.

Appraises his/her own effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness.
Strives to maintain and improve professional competence specific to the adolescent learner.

Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.

Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
