WORKING TITLE: Teacher, Reading Support GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the supervision of the principal and with the direction of the Lead Reading Recovery Teacher, teachers and teachers-in-training, in this class, provide daily, intensive, individualized instruction to struggling first graders in compliance with the Standards and Guidelines of Reading Recovery in the United States; communicates regularly with MCPS staff and parents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, MCPS policies, and effective instructional practices. Ability to learn new ways of observing, analyzing, and teaching children to read and write using Reading Recovery teaching procedures, systematic assessment of reading behaviors, and record evidence of progress. Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. Ability to infuse technology into curriculum. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. At least 3 years successful teaching experience with primary-age children, extensive background in teaching reading preferred.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meets Maryland state certification requirements in appropriate field of education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student.
On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs four identified struggling first grade students daily in the locations and at the times designated.
Creates a learning environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives following the Reading Recovery lesson structure.
Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of four identified struggling first grade students daily to reach average performance within 12-15 weeks. Serve a minimum of eight students per year.
Prepares for instruction of assigned students, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
Communicates with parents, first-grade teachers, and other school personnel on a regular basis throughout the year to discuss progress of the identified Reading Recovery students and support the first grade teachers with planning and delivery of effective small group reading instruction.
Scaffolds the reading process for students to reach average performance within 12-15 weeks.
Serve a minimum of eight students per year.
Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs.
Plans for and utilizes instructional methods identified by Reading Recovery, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives.
Diagnoses the reading difficulties of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of central staff as required.
Provides input when necessary to student IEP's.
Takes all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, MCPS policy and administrative regulation, including Reading Recovery guidelines.
Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for student behavior and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
Appraises personal effectiveness and demonstrates successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness.
Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
Participates in school management and shares responsibility for the total school program.
Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
Performs related work as required.
