WORKING TITLE: Teacher, School based Instructional Support GRADE: AD MONTHS: 10
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction of the principal, the school-based instructional support teacher is responsible for facilitating implementation of the MCPS curricula.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of MCPS K-8 curriculum, learning theory, measurement and statistics, adult training strategies, and communication with adults. Human relations, public speaking and writing skills. Problem-solving abilities, ability to organize and conduct staff training programs.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree or equivalent. Courses in elementary education and major content areas, curriculum and instruction. Three years outstanding teaching experience at the elementary level. Experience in teacher leadership role preferred (e.g., team leader, grade level chairperson). Experience in working with diverse student populations and programs. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Advanced Professional Certificate in elementary, special, or early childhood education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Focuses on and assists teachers with implementation of the MCPS curriculum. Maintains expert knowledge of curriculum objectives for each content area and grade level; assists classroom teachers to develop and maintain short- and long-range plans for curriculum implementation. Works with teachers and students to demonstrate varied instructional methods and strategies to implement the curricula.

Facilitates, with the media specialist, purchase, dissemination and demonstration of varied instructional materials specific to implementing the curricula. Assists teachers in interdisciplinary and differentiated approaches to curriculum implementation. Provides special assistance as assigned to teachers who need help in curriculum implementation and instruction.

Helps coordinate annual and special projects which have a curriculum focus (e.g., outdoor education, cultural arts, education fair, and kindergarten roundup). Assesses, with staff involvement, school training needs and plans, conducts and evaluates programs, or activities to meet identified needs.


Coordinates with other school-based personnel the use and analysis of standardized and criterion-referenced testing materials. Assists with the development of action plans to ameliorate curriculum needs as identified through data analysis. Provides input on long-range needs for school planning.

Serves as liaison with teacher specialists and assists with coordination of their work in the school.

Participates in grade level/team meetings, providing leadership in curriculum matters. Assists in the development of internal and external articulation procedures as appropriate for the school.

Assists the principal regarding matters of instructional organization including academic groupings, pupil placement, and assignment of instructional personnel. Assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of action plans and minigrants as they relate to BOE priorities and curriculum implementation. Assesses, with staff involvement, training needs relative to curriculum implementation. Plans, conducts, and evaluates local staff training programs. Assists in the development of a comprehensive training plan for the school and identifies available training programs.

Assists the principal in disseminating information about curricula to appropriate community groups.

Participates as appropriate in parent conferences related to curriculum implementation. Assists in the process of involving parents and other community members as volunteers in the school.

Plans with the principal, appropriate staff, and community leaders academic cocurricular and extracurricular activities.

Promotes use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.

Performs other duties as assigned.
