SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the Alternative Programs supervisor/ designee, plans and implements a program for secondary school students to 1) provide differentiated instruction 2) remediate academic deficiencies 3) improve behavior and social skills, 4) improve attendance, and 5) support students in meeting exit criteria to make them eligible to return to a comprehensive school program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of MCPS curriculum and a broad repertoire of effective instructional strategies. A keen understanding of human behavior. Skills in motivating reluctant learners and building school connectedness. Expertise in differentiated instruction and teaching basic skills. Skill in behavioral management strategies and social skills instruction. Ability to work collaboratively. Excellent communication and human relations skills. Ability to work effectively with the supervisor, site coordinator, leadership team members, colleagues, and parents.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree or equivalent with special interest in teaching at-risk adolescents. Three years outstanding teacher experience. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for a core high school subject: English, math, science, social studies or special education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the delivery of academic, behavioral, and social instruction following MCPS curriculum and state core learning goals to classroom of students, small groups, and individuals.

Knowledge in the use of educational technologies.

Ability to monitor and analyze individual and group performance data and to create action plans to improve student outcomes.

Develops and implements strategies for involving unsuccessful students in the school program.

Participates in program management and shares responsibility for the program.

Serves as teacher advisor for small groups of students.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
