SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under direction/supervision of the school principal, the Alternative Level I teacher plans and implements a program for secondary school students to support students in experiencing greater academic and behavioral success and in meeting exit criteria to make them eligible to return full-time to a regular comprehensive school program; improve student attendance; engage parents in the students¿ program; improve behavior and social skills and provide differentiated instruction and increase the amount of school work completed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of MCPS curriculum and Program of Studies and a broad repertoire of effective instructional strategies to facilitate differentiated instruction. A belief that all students can succeed. Skills in motivating reluctant learners, effective monitoring skills for individual and small groups of students and building school connectedness. Skilled in assessment, intervention implementation, data collection and analysis. Skills in behavioral management strategies and social skills instruction. Ability to effectively engage parents. Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors. Excellent communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree or equivalent with special interest in teaching discouraged learners and at-risk adolescents. . Three years outstanding teacher experience. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements in appropriate field of education.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the delivery of academic, behavioral, and social instruction following MCPS curriculum and state core learning goals to classroom(s) of students, small groups, and individuals.
Ability to monitor and analyze individual and group performance data and to create individual action plans to improve student outcomes. Knowledge of varied instructional strategies and educational technologies.
Develops and implements strategies for involving students in the school program.
Ability to serve as a resource, support, and collaborate with to classroom teachers.
Participates in program management and shares responsibility for the program.
Serves as teacher advisor for small groups of students.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
